Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

앞으로 치욕의 날로 기억될 1941년 12월 7일인 어제, 미합중국은 일본 해군과 항공대로부터 고의적이고 기습적인 공격을 받았습니다.



The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

미국은 일본 제국과 평화를 유지하고 있었으며 일본의 요청으로, 그들의 정부와 황제를 상대로 함께 태평양에서의 평화유지를 목표로 하는 대화를 나누고 있었습니다.



Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And, while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

하와이에서 일본까지의 거리를 고려한다면 공격은 수일 혹은 심지어 수주 전부터 고의적으로 계획되었음이 명백합니다. 그 준비 기간 동안 일본 정부는 평화유지를 희망하는 표현과 진술로 고의적으로 미국 정부를 기만하였습니다.


The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

하와이 제도에 대한 어제의 공격은 미국 해군과 군사력에 심각한 피해를 입혔습니다. 유감스럽게도 매우 많은 미국 국민들이 희생되었음을 여러분께 알려드립니다. 덧붙여, 샌프란시스코와 호놀룰루 사이의 공해상에서 미국 군함들이 어뢰 공격을 받았다는 보고가 들어왔습니다. .


Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Japan has therefore undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation. As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense, that always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

그러므로 일본은 태평양 전역에 걸쳐 기습 공격을 감행한 것입니다. 어제와 오늘 벌어진 일들이 이를 스스로 증명합니다. 미국 국민들은 이미 뜻을 굳혔고 우리나라의 생명과 안전에 초래된 결과를 잘 이해하고 있습니다. 미국 육군과 해군의 통수권자로서 본인은 국가 방위를 위한 모든 조치를 지시하였으며, 이 조치는 모든 국민이 우리에게 가해진 침략의 성격을 기억하도록 할 것입니다.


No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people, in their righteous might, will win through to absolute victory.

우리가 이 계획적 침공을 격퇴하는 데에 얼마의 시간이 걸리든, 미국 국민들은 정의로운 힘을 모아 완전한 승리를 거두게 될 것입니다.


I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

최선을 다해 우리 자신의 방위를 위해 노력해야 할 뿐 아니라 이러한 식의 배신 행위가 앞으로 다시는 우리를 위협하지 못하도록 확실히 해두어야 한다는 나의 주장은 의회와 국민 모두의 뜻을 반영한 것이라고 믿는 바입니다.


Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

이제 침략의 위협은 분명히 존재합니다. 우리 국민, 우리 영토, 우리의 이익이 심각한 위험 사태에 처해 있다는 사실은 분명합니다.


With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph. So help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.
