There were proud people of great courage, but not versed in horsemanship, who fought rather with the sword than with the lance. Since they could not control the movements of their horses with their hands they were unable to inflict serious injuries with the lance; however, they excelled with the sword. These swords were very long and sharp and they were often capable of cutting someone vertically in two!
They preferred to dismount and take guard on foot, and they chose rather to die than to retreat. Such was their bravery that they were far more formidable like this than when riding on horseback.

When the armies united together, a certain byword which from of old used to be uttered by the French to the Germans was then openly applied, which vervally runs something like "Budge, German."
Whence such a thing takes its origin I will immediately reveal.
These nations' fashion of waging battle is not the same.
The French are particularly capable of riding horseback in good order and attacking with the spear, and their cavalry surpasses that of the Germans in speed.
The Germans, however, are able to fight on foot better than the French and excel in using the great sword.
So whenever the Germans campaign against the French, they feel doubtful of their cavalry and determine to wage war on foot.
Encountering their undisciplined cavalry, the French defeat it;
charging the more expert part of the Germans, they drive back those who go on foot, although they are greatly inferior to them in number;
they mock them with the said expression, because while it is possible to fight with horses, they choose warfare on foot.
As stated, this was then repeatedly applied by the French to the Germans and greatly vexed them.

Charles' men were very worn out, starving and well outnumbered, but in spite of Manfred's idiocy, they very nearly lost the battle after all - because those heavily armoured Germans, with their great swords, seemed to be impervious to the utmost that the French and Provencal knights could do to them.
They began to mow their opponents down, keeping knee to knee together and steadily forcing their way forward, hewing down all in front of them.
Then somebody noticed that when they lifted their arms to strike, a more or less unprotected place appeared under their arms.
All the chroniclers who wrote of this battle emphasise that the French were armed with swords quite different from those of the Germans, shorter and more accutely pointed.
The knight who noticed the weak, unarmoured place under the Germans' arms yelled out "a l'Estoc!, a l'Estoc!" "Use the point!"
And they did, thrusting their sharp little swords into the Germans' chests.
Very soon, their solid formation began to break up.
