Hyundai Heavy Industries' plan to setup a shipbuilding facility at the Cerberus Agila Subic Shipyard (former Hanjin Subic Shipyard) appears to be aimed at four potential market developments where the Korean shipbuilder may take advantage in participating.

The US Navy is studying the use of Japanese shipbuilders to maintain its ships in the region. And this is believed to potentially expand to South Korea, the Philippines & Singapore.

HHI's facility in both Korea and the Philippines may be able to take advantage of this.

HHI signed an agreement with the Philippine DND for the maintenance of PN's Jose Rizal-class frigates, and other HHI-built ships.

Having a facility in Subic allows for an easier implementation of this contract while augmenting the existing facilities in South Korea.

The Philippine Navy's Horizon 3 modernization program phase has started this year & the Philippine Navy is expected to acquire additional new warships. Among those that could potentially be raised under Horizon 3 are 2 additional brand new frigates at a minimum.

At best, the PN's Horizon 3 procurement plan may also include 2 more corvettes, 1 or 2 landing ships tank, 1 or 2 logistics support ships & a mine warfare vessel, not to mention the 2 submarines.

The Philippine Coast Guard is also planning to procure more patrol OPVs & Korea is preparing itself to be a potential Devt Assistance Grant provider that will allow Koreans to build the ships

Having HHI position itself in the PH would make it easier for them to compete.

HHI is positioning itself in the SEA market, eyeing new markets like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

A shipyard in the Philippines allow HHI to be more competitive, while also augmenting its South Korean operations should it be overloaded by new contracts.

Even if not all of these developments go in favor of HHI, a shipyard in Subic will still benefit them in one way or the other.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if HHI have other potential competitors in leasing Cerberus Agila Shipyard's facilities, like Australia's Austal.




현대중공업이 케르베로스 아길라 수빅조선소(구 한진수빅조선소)에 조선설비를 건립한다는 계획은 국내 조선사가 참여해 유리한 4대 시장개척을 노린 것으로 보인다.

미 해군은 이 지역에서 선박을 유지하기 위해 일본 조선업체를 활용하는 방법을 연구하고 있습니다.  그리고 이것은 잠재적으로 한국, 필리핀 및 싱가포르로 확장될 것으로 믿어집니다.

한국과 필리핀에 있는 현대중공업의 설비는 이를 활용할 수 있을 것입니다.

현대중공업은 필리핀 DND와 PN의 Jose Rizal급 호위함 및 기타 현대중공업 건조 선박의 유지보수 계약을 체결했습니다.

수빅에 시설이 있으면 한국의 기존 시설을 보강하면서 이 계약을 더 쉽게 이행할 수 있습니다.

필리핀 해군의 Horizon 3 현대화 프로그램 단계가 올해 시작되었으며 필리핀 해군은 추가로 새로운 전함을 획득할 것으로 예상됩니다.  Horizon 3에서 잠재적으로 들어올릴 수 있는 것 중에는 최소 2대의 새로운 프리깃이 추가로 있습니다.

기껏해야 PN의 Horizon 3 조달 계획에는 2척의 잠수함은 말할 것도 없고 2척의 추가 코르벳함, 1~2척의 상륙함 탱크, 1~2척의 물류 지원선 및 기뢰전함도 포함될 수 있습니다.

필리핀 해안 경비대는 또한 더 많은 순찰 OPV를 조달할 계획이며 한국은 한국인이 선박을 건조할 수 있도록 잠재적인 Devt Assistance Grant 제공자가 되기 위해 준비하고 있습니다.

현대중공업이 PH에 위치하면 경쟁이 더 쉬워질 것이다.

현대중공업은 말레이시아, 인도네시아, 태국 등 신규 시장을 개척하며 동남아 시장에 포지셔닝하고 있습니다.

필리핀에 있는 조선소 덕분에 HHI는 경쟁력을 높일 수 있는 동시에 새로운 계약으로 인해 과부하가 걸릴 경우 한국 사업을 강화할 수 있습니다.

이러한 모든 개발이 HHI에 유리하게 진행되지는 않더라도 수빅의 조선소는 여전히 어떤 식으로든 그들에게 이익이 될 것입니다.

한편 현대중공업이 Cerberus Agila 조선소 설비를 임차하는 데 호주의 Austal과 같은 다른 잠재적인 경쟁자가 있는지는 두고 볼 일이다.
