1987년 3월 말, 소련 해군의 빅터 III급 다섯 척이 (아마 무르만스크일) 기지를 출항함. 여기에는 개중 특히 조용하고 승조원들도 배를 잘 몰아서 '어둠의 왕자'라는 별명이 붙은 한 척이 포함되어 있었음.

그리고 GIUK 갭의 SOSUS는 이들이 출항하자 마자 바로 탐지함.

이후로도 SOSUS를 포함한 NATO 수중감시체계는 노스케이프를 돌아 대서양으로 나가서 미 연안까지 갔다가 다시 돌아오는 전 과정에서 추적을 유지함.

당연하게도 다섯 척 모두에 미/영 SSN들이 따라붙어서 미행함. 네 척은 지속적으로 미행이 유지됐고 '어둠의 왕자'만 미행을 을 하던 미/영 SSN이 놓쳤다 말았다 했음.


Silent Deep, p 564, recount operations to late in March 1987 to trail five ‘Victor III’-class submarines, one of which, the ‘Prince of Darkness’, seemed both particularly quiet and particularly well-handled. SOSUS picked them up as soon as they left base. They were apparently held almost continuously from when they rounded the North Cape, all the way down the Norwegian Sea and out into the Atlantic, then west towards the US coast, where they were apparently intended to find US SSBNs. Then they turned back to the North Atlantic. Off the British coast they apparently conducted an anti-SSBN manoeuvre. US and British SSNs managed to maintain firm contact with four of the five and USS Dallas managed to trail the quietest.


진짜 전략적 대잠전을 할 거면 이런 눈에 안 띄는 탐지자산에 투자를 할 생각을 해야함. 얘네가 핵심이자 기본임. 겉보기에 멋져보이는 배나 항공기가 아니라.
