Home / News & Events / Security Alert U.S. Embassy Jerusalem (April 20, 2024)

Location:โ€ฏโ€ฏIsrael, the West Bank, and Gaza

Event:โ€ฏโ€ฏSecurity Alert

The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness as security incidents often take place without warning.โ€ฏ The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events.

The U.S. Embassy has lifted the travel restrictions on U.S. government employees and their family members under Chief of Mission (COM) security responsibility that were announced on April 19, and personal travel is no longer limited to within and between Tel Aviv (including Herzliya, Netanya, and Even Yehuda), Jerusalem, and Beโ€™er Sheva.

As a reminder, U.S. government employees and their families under COM security responsibility are still restricted from personal travel to the following locations in Israel:

Within seven miles of the Gaza demarcation line, as well as the cities of Ashdod and Ashkelon;

Within 2.5 miles of the Lebanese and Syrian borders; and

Within 1.5 miles of the Israel-Egypt border.

As a reminder, U.S. government employees and their families under COM security responsibility are still restricted from personal travel in the West Bank, except:

Routes 1, 90, and 443 at any time;

Personal travel to Jericho;โ€ฏand

Daylight travel to: Inn of the Good Samaritan, An-Nabi Musa, Wadi Qelt Nature Preserve, and St. Georgeโ€™s Monastery along Route 1; and Qumran, Kalia Beach, St. Gerasimos/Khogla Monastery, Al Auju, and Qasr al-Yaud baptismal site along Route 90.

This is provided for your information as you make your own security plans.

In response to security incidents and without advance notice, the U.S. Embassy may further restrict or prohibit U.S. government employees and their family members under COM security responsibility from traveling to certain areas of Israel (including the Old City of Jerusalem) and the West Bank.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to consult the currentโ€ฏTravel Advisoryโ€ฏand Country Information Page for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, which advise U.S. citizens to be aware of the continuing risks of travel to Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza due to the security situation and heightened regional tensions and warns against travel to Gaza.

U.S. citizens can find additional information regarding steps to take in case of mortar and rocket fire in the Country Information Page for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza:

Mortar and Rocket Fire:โ€ฏ In the event of mortar or rocket fire, aโ€ฏโ€œred alertโ€ siren may be activated.โ€ฏ Treat all such alerts as real; follow the instructions from local authorities and seek shelter immediately.โ€ฏ Know the location of your closest shelter or protected space.โ€ฏ U.S. government personnel and their family members under COM security responsibility may be restricted from traveling to areas affected by rocket activity, sirens, and/or the opening of bomb shelters.โ€ฏ For additional information on appropriate action to take upon hearing a siren or explosion, seeโ€ฏtheโ€ฏIsrael Defense Forces Home Front Command websiteโ€ฏ(available on devices within Israel)โ€ฏor view theโ€ฏPreparedness Information PDF. U.S. citizens may also wish to download the free Israel Defense Forces Home Front Command application on Android or Appleโ€ฏdevices to receive real-time security and safety alerts.โ€ฏ Free commercial applications, such as Red Alert: Israel, are also available.

Actions to Take:

Refer to our website for the latest Security and Health Alerts:โ€ฏโ€ฏhttps://il.usembassy.gov/covid-19-information/andโ€ฏhttps://il.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/security-and-travel-information/.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings.

Avoid all areas where there is a heavy police presence.

Monitor local media.

Follow the instructions of local authorities.

Enroll in the Department ofโ€ฏStateโ€™s Smart Traveler Enrollment Programโ€ฏ(STEP).โ€ฏ STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency.

Regularly monitor the State Departmentโ€™sโ€ฏwebsite, where you can find current Travel Advisories (including theโ€ฏTravel Advisory for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza) and theโ€ฏWorldwide Caution. Read theโ€ฏCountry Informationโ€ฏfor Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. For additional information, refer to โ€œTravelerโ€™s Checklistโ€ on the State Departmentโ€™s website.
