May, 1968 - I graduated from high school.

1968년 5월 – 고등학교 졸업

December, 1968 - I flunked out of college

1968년 12월 – 대학교 제적

February, 1969 - I started talking to local National Guard and Army Reserve Units with the simple goal of signing up to a unit so I won't get drafted and sent to Vietnam.

1969년 2월 - 근처 주방위군이나 육군 예비군 부대들에 연락을 넣어보기 시작했어. 어디든 배치받아서 징집 안 당하고 베트남으로 보내지지 않기 위해.

 

April, 1969 –

1969년 4월 -

I'm at work when I'm called inside to the office. It is the Recruiter (R) for The Local Army Reserve Unit. They had someone drop out at the last minute and he wants to know if I can report to the induction center at 5:00AM tomorrow. I said I could.

일하는 중에 사무실로 불려갔어. 지역 육군 예비군 모병관이었어. 누군가 배치되기 직전에 지원을 철회해서, 내가 익일 새벽 5시에 모병 센터에 올 수 있는지 물어보더라고. 난 당연히 된다고 했지.


About 20 minutes later, I'm on the phone with him again. When he went to the Selective Service office to get my paperwork they told him my draft notice had been mailed out that morning. "I can't touch you."

20분 뒤, 다시 전화가 왔어. 모병관이 내 서류를 가지러 선발징병청 사무소에 갔을 때 내 징집통지서가 아침에 발송되었다는 답변을 들었다는거야.

“난 너 못 건드려.”


Sure enough, my draft notice was in the mail the next day. I tried the Navy and Air Force, but they wouldn't talk with you once you were drafted. That left the Army and the Marines.

다음날에 진짜로 우편함에 징집통지서가 와있더라고. 해군이랑 공군에 연락해봤지만, 징집된 사람과는 할 얘기가 없다더라. 남은건 육군과 해병대 밖에 없었지.


The Army Recruiter was happy to talk with me. He suggested I sign up to train on Chaparral Missiles school, which he said were only used in the US and Europe (NATO). So I signed up, for 3 years.

육군 모병관은 기꺼이 내 얘기를 들어주었어. 그는 채퍼럴 미사일 학교에서 훈련을 받는걸 추천했지. 미국이랑 유럽(나토)에서만 쓰인다했어. 그래서 난 지원했어, 3년짜리로.


But the Recruiter wasn't done. "How would you like to earn around $100/month more?" I ended up signing up for Chaparral Missile Non-Commissioned Officer School (NCOCS). Still only 3-years, but I would end up a Sargent E-5 instead of Private E-2.

하지만 모병관은 거기서 멈추지 않았어. “달마다 $100씩 추가로 벌 수 있는데 어때?”

난 결국 채퍼럴 미사일 부사관 학교에 지원했어. 기간은 3년으로 같았지만, 수료하고 이병 대신 병장이 되는 계약이었지.


When I arrived at Fort Bliss, things didn't go as I expected. While processing my paperwork, the clerk noticed a problem. To be eligible for Chaparral Missile NCOCS, soldiers had to have ALREADY have served for 2 years. He said he would need to put me in Heavy Automatic Weapons Antiaircraft Air Defense NCOCS because that was the only NCOCS I was eligible for.

내가 포트 블리스 기지에 도착했을 때, 일이 내가 예상한대로 진행되지 않더라고. 내 서류를 처리하는 도중에 행정병이 문제를 발견했어. 채퍼럴 미사일 부사관 학교에 입교하려면, 이미 2년 복무했었어야 된다는거야. 내가 지원할 수 있는 부사관 학교는 중화기 대공방어 학교 밖에 없다더라고.


When I asked him where they served after graduation, he said they all went to Vietnam. I volunteered to drop the NCOCS thing and just stick with Chaparral Missiles, but since NCOCS was my 'major' school, the Army had to give me NCOCS.

수료 후 어디로 가는지 물어보니, 행정별 왈 전부 베트남으로 보내진다는거야. 난 부사관 집어치우고 그냥 채퍼럴 미사일 학교로 가겠다했지만, 부사관 학교가 내 ‘주’ 학교였기 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 부사관 학교에 넣을 수 밖에 없다는 답변을 들었어.


So after Basic Training, Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and then NCOCS, off to Vietnam I went as a brand new Sargent E-5, assigned to a Duster battery.

그래서 기초군사훈련, 특기교육, 부사관학교를 차례로 수료한 뒤 난 더스터 자주대공포 포대에 배치되었고, 갓 임관한 병장으로서 베트남으로 갔어. (M42A1 더스터 자주대공포)


About 6 months later, two of the men in my squad rotated out, and two new men were assigned. I asked them if they were trained on Dusters.

6개월 뒤 분대원 둘이 교체되었고, 신병 둘이 왔어. 난 걔네가 더스터 자주대공포 훈련을 받았는지 물어봤지.


No, it turns out both were trained on Chaparral Missiles. That gave me lots to think about.

아니. 알고보니 둘 다 채퍼럴 미사일 교육을 받았다는거야. 참 많은 생각이 들더라.
