Thank you for your story. Sorry for the treatment, that sort of crap was the norm by 72.

I too got a good dose of US attitudes toward their military when I returned from two and a half years in asia, late 1965 to November of 68, the country had changed utterly. No one spit on me but there was a hippie reception committee when we disembarked at Oakland, CA. They called us "Baby Killers" and all of that happy horseshit. We ignored them, all we had on our minds was getting home, and were so happy to have made it through the war. I did think it awfully odd though, and confusing. this anger directed at us.

For no good reason, except being so glad to be back in the good ol' USA, and once I had processed out at Oakland Army Reception, I began an impromptu tour of the whole country, meaning I just kept catching military standby hops to one city after another. I would check the air schedules in each airport I landed at to see when the next available flight to anywhere was. I'd then might head downtown for a look-see or just hole up in the airport lounge and drink while people watching before catching a flight to the next city. This went on for three-four days before I finally hopped a flight to Atlanta, my Home of Record at the time.

Wherever I went people were weird toward me, my uniform. Sit down at a table, or at the bar, and people would give you dirty looks, mumble among themselves then move away, no one wanted to engage in conversation, some (most) of the bartenders were rude, a couple of them flat out told me to leave. Weird times! I have never, and will never, forgive my fellow countrymen for treating us so.
