Not everyone is cut out to be in the military. Draft boards didn't seem to agree or care.

누구나 다 군대 체질인건 아니야.

징병 위원회는 이에 동의하지 않거나, 딱히 신경쓰지 않는거같더라고.

 

I was in 1st platoon. There was a kid in 2nd platoon that was constantly surrounded by DI's to the point that even 1st platoon knew his name. From what I could see, he reminded me of Gomer Pyle's less intelligent younger brother. Same smile, same attitude. So uncoordinated, one of the DI's asked if he had 3 left feet.

난 1소대였어. 2소대엔 항상 교관들로 둘러싸여서 갈굼받던 훈련병이 하나 있었지. 하도 유명해서 우리 소대도 걔 이름을 알 정도였어.

내가 보기엔 그 훈련병은 고머 파일의 더 멍청한 동생쯤 되보였어. 같은 미소, 같은 태도. 한 교관이 왼발이 세개냐고 물어볼 정도로 제식훈련을 어려워했어.

(two left feet: 춤을 잘 못 추는 사람을 일컫는 표현. 해당 훈련병이 그만큼 움직임이 서툴렀다, 지시를 못 따랐다는 느낌)

 

While I was in Basic, the DI's would punish the entire platoon for the mistakes of a single man. This usually produced results, because there were always some men in the platoon that would have a meaningful discussion in the latrine with the man.

내가 훈련소에 있었을 때, 교관들은 훈련병 한명이 저지른 실수를 빌미로 소대 전체에 얼차려를 주곤 했지.

이건 대개 효과가 있었어. 소대마다 그 훈련병이랑 화장실에서 의미있는 대화를 나눌 사람들이 꼭 있기 마련이었으니.

 

I have to believe that he faced this kind of pressure, but he seemed incapable of change. And if the DI's couldn't get him to do a "left face" correctly after 3 weeks, threats by other trainees weren't going to work. Motivation wasn't this kid's problem.

교관들의 지도 아래 3주가 지난 후에도 ‘좌향좌’를 터득하지 못했다면, 다른 훈련병들이 아무리 협박을 한다해도 바뀔건 없었어. 걘 동기부여가 문제가 아니었어.

 

One Saturday morning, I think 4 weeks in, all of 2nd Platoon lost their 4-hour on-base pass because of this kid. All of 1st Platoon knew, because we could hear the DI's yelling from across the grinder.

어느 토요일 아침, 아마 4주차에, 2소대 전원이 그 훈련병 때문에 4시간짜리 기지 내부 통행증을 박탈당했어. 1소대는 이걸 어떻게 알았냐면, 2소대 교관들이 연병장 반대편에서 소리 지르는게 우리한테까지 들렸거든.

 

On Sunday we heard that a "blanket party" was held Saturday night with this kid the guest of honor. He must have taken quite a beating, based on how he walked for the next few days.

일요일에, 2소대에서 토요일 밤에 “담요 파티”를 열었다는 소식을 들었어. 주인공은 그 훈련병이었지. 다음 며칠 동안 걸어다니는 모습으로 봐선, 아주 흠씬 두들겨맞은 것 같아보였어.

 

The next Saturday morning we learned that this kid had killed himself during the night.

다음주 토요일 아침엔 그 훈련병이 밤사이 자살했다는 소식을 들었지.

 

Training continued as if nothing had happened.

훈련은 계속되었어. 아무 일도 없었던 것처럼.
