Salad Dressing, Booze, and Truck Parts

샐러드 드레싱, 술 그리고 트럭 부품

 

The following story is based on what I understand to have been the truth. I wasn't an active participant, but I did buy and drink a few rum and cokes.

이 이야기는 내가 알기로 사실에 기반해. 난 적극적 참여자는 아니었지만, 럼이랑 콜라를 몇번 사긴 했어.

By 1970 Vietnamization was well underway. Making sure that the ARVNs had everything they needed was a priority.

1970년엔 베트남화가 한창 진행 중이었어. 남베트남군을 무장하고 채비시키는게 미군의 우선순위였지.

 

Unfortunately, that included truck parts. US trucking units struggled to get anything through official channels, while ARVN trucking units were seemingly awash in parts.

안타깝게도 거기엔 트럭 부품도 포함되었어. 미군 수송대대가 공식 루트로 트럭 부품을 구할 수가 없어서 답답해하는 동안 남베트남군 수송대대는 부품이 넘쳐나는 중이었지.

 

The supply Sargent for the Duster battery I was part of had a similar problem finding parts for our battery's trucks. He found a devious and profitable solution.

내가 있던 더스터 자주대공포 포대의 행정보급관도 비슷한 문제에 직면에 있었어. 하지만 그는 곧 수익성 좋은 교묘한 해결책을 떠올렸지.

 

He made use of the following facts.

the ARVN trucking units had a ready market for salad dressing (mayonnaise, mostly).

남베트남군 수송대대는 샐러드 드레싱을 원했고 (주로 마요네즈)

US trucking units hauled supplies to units all over Vietnam, including salad dressing and booze.

미군 수송대대는 베트남 전역에 물자를 공급했어. 거기엔 술과 샐러드 드레싱도 포함되었지.

US soldiers were a ready market for booze

미군들은 술을 원했어.

traded salad dressing for truck parts with ARVN truckers

남베트남군에게 샐러드 드레싱을 주고 트럭 부품을 받았고

traded truck parts for salad dressing and booze with US truckers

미군에게 트럭 부품을 주고 샐러드 드레싱이랑 술을 받았어.

ran an unofficial NCO club at our battery compound, with a brisk carryout business for E-4 and below

그리고 우리 포대 기지에 비공식 부사관 전용 주점을 차렸어.

상병 이하는 테이크아웃만 가능했지만, 인기만점이었지.

 

As a result, we didn't have a supply problem.

그 덕에, 우린 공급 부족을 걱정할 필요가 없었지.

 

EDIT TO ADD!!!

It has occurred to me that probably the condiments were the ones in little packages that didn't need refrigeration. That would be a big advantage in a country where most people didn't have access to electricity or refrigeration. That also makes more sense than just salad dressing, but as I remember it that was what I was told.

수정할게 있어!!

그 샐러드 드레싱들은 아마 냉장이 필요없는 조그만 봉지에 들어있었을거야. 대부분의 사람들이 전기나 냉장시설을 쓰지 못하던 나라에선 꽤나 큰 장점이었겠지. 이게 그냥 샐러드 드레싱보다는 더 말이 될거같긴해. 위의 이야기는 내가 들은대로 적은거야.
