My father, including many of my uncles were a part of a resistance called the Mujahideen (soldiers of god) against the occupation of Soviet forces in Afghanistan. In this post I will focus on a successful ambush that one uncle of mine had led against a large convoy as he was also a commander.

내 아버지와 삼촌들은 소련군의 아프가니스탄 점령에 맞서싸운 무자히딘(신의 전사들)이라는 저항군의 일원이었어. 이 글에서는 한 삼촌이 지휘관으로서 소련군 대규모 수송대를 상대로 수행했던 습격 작전을 다룰거야.

 

This story takes place sometime around 1984-1985. My uncle was a commander who fought in the southern regions of Afghanistan for the entire duration of his military career. He goes on to explain that at the time of this story, thousands of Soviet forces had an ongoing offensive where they targeted Mujahideen supply routes from the borders of different countries and they were targeting Mujahideen bases.

My uncle goes onto explain that these forces were no ordinary soldiers as they were Spetznaz, so fighting them directly was difficult. My uncle knew that the best way to get the soviets to call off this operation was to exhaust their supplies when they would go on many combat missions and have no one to refill whatever the soldiers would need. One particular day, a contact in the Afghan communist government had revealed to my uncle about a convoy that was soon to pass a highway filled with foodstuff, ammunitions and medical supplies that was there to supply Soviet outposts and garrisons. My uncle would then go and set the kill zone of the ambush near an area where the road would become narrow passing through a valley. There were to be 86 vehicles escorted by two helicopters and a little over 200 Soviets in the vehicles. My uncle and his men went on to place mines on the road and set up camouflaged fighting positions.

어느날 아프가니스탄 공산 정권 내 연락책으로부터 식량, 탄약과 의약품을 싣고 소련군 전초기지와 주둔지로 가는 수송대가 곧 어떤 고속도로를 지날거라는 연락이 왔어.

삼촌은 도로가 협곡을 지나며 좁아지는 지점에서 공격하기로 했어. 수송대는 86대의 차량, 2대의 헬리콥터와 200명이 조금 넘는 소련군으로 구성되어 있을거라 했지. 삼촌과 그의 부하들은 도로에 지뢰를 설치하고 위장 전투진지를 만들었어.

 

When the day came, my uncle and his men numbering 175 waited anxiously for the arrival of the convoy and after some time had passed, they could see two helicopters flying overhead in front of the long line of vehicles. My uncle and his fighters were mainly armed with heavy machine guns and heavy weapons like BM-21's and DsHk's. They waited for the vehicles to come into range of the weapons and once the vehicles did, they initiated the ambush by firing their weapons from mountains surrounding the road, setting each and every vehicle on fire destroying them in the process. The helicopters were unable to react effectively due to the Mujahideen's camouflage so the pilots were not able to distinguish between the terrain where a fighter was. However, half way into the ambush, one helicopter decided to make a strafing run on one of the mountains and as soon as it started to fire near the mountains, one Mujahid used his machine gun to fire at the helicopter hitting the cockpit (weakpoint) downing the helicopter.

작전 당일날, 삼촌과 175여명의 병력은 수송대가 오기만을 기다렸어. 시간이 지나자 헬리콥터 두대를 앞세운 기다란 차량 행렬을 포착했지. 삼촌 병력들은 주로 중기관총과 중화기(BM-21, DShK)로 무장해있었어. 그들은 차량들이 사정거리 안으로 들어오길 기다렸고, 차량들이 들어오자 도로를 둘러싼 양쪽 산 위에서 무기를 발사했지. 모든 차량에 불을 지르고 파괴하는데 성공했어. 헬리콥터들은 무자히딘들의 위장 때문에 산악지형 내 적들을 제대로 포착할 수 없었고 효과적으로 대응할 수 없었어. 하지만 습격 도중 헬리콥터 한대가 스트레이핑을 시도했고, 그러자 무자히딘 하나가 기관총으로 조종석을 겨냥해 격추시켰어.

 

At the end of the ambush, my uncle said that all 86 vehicles were destroyed and one helicopter was downed. Around 200 soviets were killed and a dozen captured. As for the Mujahideen casualties, 2 fighters were killed and 11 wounded.

삼촌이 습격이 끝나고 전장을 살펴보니, 총 차량 86대와 헬리콥터 한대가 파괴되었다고 하더라고. 200명 가량의 소련군이 사망했고, 12명이 생포되었어. 무자히딘쪽 피해는 2명 사망, 11명 부상이었지.
