I think it’s been enough time where I can share a funny story with you all. Let’s go back in time when I was a young PV2. I had been assigned to an infantry battalion in Fort Campbell. My MOS was 92Y, so I worked under a big ole SSG (stereotypical supply NCO, big, definitely had it good up top so he was never chaptered.) anyways, shortly arriving to my unit my NCO had to go to Fort Polk for some pre training prior to our next JRTC rotation. While I stayed in the rear he was adamant that I had our supply office locked at all time if unattended to. I worked with another 11b who was on his way out the door from a medical situation.
공소시효가 지난 것 같으니, 재밌는 썰 하나 풀게. 내가 젊은 이등병이던 시절로 돌아가보자. 포트 캠벨 기지의 보병 대대에 배치된지 얼마 되지 않았을 때였어.
내 특기는 보급병이었고, 덩치 큰 하사 밑에서 일했어.
(전형적인 보급대대 부사관, 덩치 크고 빽도 있어서 뭘해도 처벌받지 않았어)
내가 부대에 도착한지 얼마 되지않아 그 하사는 포트 포크 기지로 가서 다음 JRTC(파병훈련소) 순환을 위한 사전 훈련을 받아야 했어.
난 기지에 남아있게 되었지만, 그는 나보고 자리를 비울땐 반드시 보급 사무실 문을 잠그라고 당부했어. 당시에 난 의료문제로 전역을 앞둔 보병 한명과 함께 일하고 있었지.
Early on the first morning of almost all leadership being gone the 11b told me to park my car out front next to the connex’s. We had a stash of about 100 boxes of MRE’s in there at that time and he told me we were taking them somewhere for some reason. Well I started shuffling about 20 boxes of MRE’s into my car and we began driving. He set his GPS to a local pawn shop about 30 minutes away from post. While driving I knew right then and there we were doing some dirty business.
지휘부가 대부분 사라진 날 첫날 아침에, 보병은 나보고 창고 앞에 내 차를 대라고 했어. 거기엔 대략 MRE 상자 백여 개가 있었고, 보병은 나보고 그것들을 어디론가 운반해야한다고 했어. 그래서 난 MRE 상자 스무개를 내 차에 실은 다음 어디론가 출발했어. 걘 GPS를 기지에서 30분 정도 떨어진 근처 전당포로 잡더라고.
그제서야 난 우리가 뭔가 구린 일을 벌이고 있다는 걸 눈치챘지.
We arrive at this run down pawn shop with a cop car out front and my first reaction was “shit, this is the day I get kicked out.” Funny enough we walk in and the cop was like “oh just some soldiers smuggling some boxes from post.” Sounds like some jail time. He quickly started laughing and pointed to the back to bring them to the pawn shop owner. As he was counting the boxes he was counting the total and he ended up bringing 25 earlier on and handed him about $1200 cash. The 11b handed me $80 and said it was my “cut.” The cop was the pawn shops best friend so we didn’t get in any trouble at the end of the day. I know some of you have done some dirty backdoor deals but this was one of those times I thought was the beginning and end of a career.
웬 허름한 전당포에 도착했는데, 전당포 앞에 경찰차가 하나 있더라고. 난 “아 망했네 강제 퇴역 당하겠구나” 싶었지. 우리가 들어가니 그 경찰이 막 이러는거야 “이게 뭐야, 기지에서 박스 밀반출하는 군인들이네”. 감옥가겠다 싶었지. 근데 걘 갑자기 웃으면서 뒷방에 있는 전당포 주인한테 가져가라고 손짓했어.
주인은 박스를 셌고, 이전에 가져온 박스 25개까지 해서 1200불을 건네줬어. 그 보병은 내게 80불을 줬고, 내 몫이라 했어. 알고보니 그 경찰은 전당포 주인과 친구 사이였고, 결국 아무 일도 없었던 걸로 됐지.
이거 읽는 사람들 중엔 이런 뒷거래 해본 사람들도 있겠지만, 난 그날 내 군생활이 끝날까봐 너무 무서웠어.
