Leaving Vietnam

1971, a long, long time ago. Many details have been lost during the years I tried to forget. Conversations are not word for word accurate, but basically correct.

In Vietnam I was the squad leader (Sgt E5) of a duster

At the end of my deployment I reported early in the morning to the Battery clerk to out-process. As he handed me my pa?perwork, he said something like, "Man, I wish I could have been out in the field where the action is, like you."

At Battalion headquarters, as he hands me my pa?pers that clerk says something like, "Man, I wish I could have been up at the Battery level, where the action is, like you."

At I-Corp headquarters, as he hands me my pa?pers that clerk says something like, "Man, I wish I could have been up at Battalion, where the action is, like you."

Unfortunately, I can't remember if something similar happened during final out-processing, but I think so. I found it funny that everyone seemed to think that if they were just at the next lower (higher?) level they would be 'where the action is'.

Late that last night came peeing in a cup with someone watching (one observer for each urinal, seated directly over the urinal, just weird!), and a strip search to make sure I wasn't taking anything home (we had to strip, leave the building naked, get searched, walk to a different building and put on a completely different uniform).

As soon as we had dressed we were rushed to a waiting plane. The cheering was pretty loud as we lifted into the air.

About 24 hours later we arrived in Washington state to protesters. The next day I'm home on a 30-day leave.

For the next month, when I would run into someone from school, at some point they would usually say something like, "I haven't seen you for a while. Where have you been?"

When I told them, "Vietnam," they usually realized they had something important they needed to do.
