Now retired, I spend more time surfing YouTube than I care to admit. A couple of years ago I ran across a video about a Marine who was attacked by a tiger in Quang Tri provence.
은퇴하고 나니, 부끄러울만큼 유투브를 많이 보게 되더라.
몇년 전에 베트남 꽝찌성에서 호랑이에게 공격받은 미 해병대원에 관한 영상을 본 적이 있었어.
Then, this morning I found a post in Reddit about tigers in Vietnam:
그러다가 오늘 아침에 레딧에서 베트남 호랑이에 대한 글을 보게 되었어. 링크는 위와 같아.
As a result, I decided to share my experience. Was it a tiger? Maybe...
그래서 이 참에 내 경험도 여기에 공유하려고. 내가 봤던게 진짜 호랑이였을까? 모르지…
I'm the squad leader (Sgt E5) of a duster.
당시 난 더스터 자주대공포 분대장이었어. (병장, E5)
1971, Quang Tri provence, somewhere in the vicinity of Khe Sanh.
1971년, 베트남 꽝찌성, 케산 근처 어딘가
We parked overnight before heading west the next day, part of what I later learned was Operation Dewey Canyon 2, in su?pport of the ARVN Operation Lam Son 719 move into Laos. After all these years, I'm not sure of the exact date this happened. We weren't the first to arrive at Khe Sanh, but we were fairly early in the process, and we were definitely among the very first to arrive near the border with Laos.
우린 다음날 서쪽으로 이동할 계획이었고, 자고 가기 위해 더스터를 주차했어.
나중에야 알았지만, 우리는 라오스로 진격하려는 남베트남군의 ‘람선 719’ 작전을 지원하는 미군의 ‘듀이 협곡 2’ 작전의 일부였어. 하도 오래 전이라, 이젠 정확한 날짜는 기억나지 않아. 우리가 케산에 처음 도착한 부대는 아니었지만 꽤나 일찍 도착한 축에 속했고, 라오스 국경 근처에 도착한 첫 부대 중 하나였어.
We spent that night up in the tub with the guns. It was as dark as the inside of a cave. Can't see your hand in front of your face dark. No night vision equipment. At some point the jungle goes quiet, silent, for about 5 minutes. Spooky.
그날 밤 우린 다같이 더스터에 탑승해있었어. 정글은 동굴 안처럼 어두웠어. 눈 앞의 본인 손도 안 보일만큼 어두웠지. 야간 투시 장비도 없었어.
그러다 어느 순간 갑자기, 정글이 5분간 조용해졌어, 완전히 침묵하듯이. 오싹하더라고.
The next morning, when I climbed down to relieve myself, I notice some animal tracks in the mud that passed no more that 10-15 feet from our duster. They sure looked like the tracks of a big cat. A BiG Cat! After mulling it over for a few minutes, we loaded up and pulled out. And I basically forgot about it. Until finding that video on YouTube.
다음날 아침에 오줌 누러 더스터에서 내려왔을 때, 3,4m 떨어진 곳에 진흙 속 동물 발자국이 보였어. 커다란 고양이 발자국처럼 보이긴 했어. 진짜 줫나 큰 고양이!
잠시 고민한 뒤, 우린 짐을 챙겨서 그 자리를 떠났어. 그러곤 이 일을 완전히 잊어버렸지. 유투브 그 비디오를 보기 전까진.
Nothing exciting, just... spooky.
딱히 스릴있는 일은 아니었지만…그냥 뭔가 소름돋더라고.
