캘리포니아 걸스


This is a story from my grandfather, who served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the cold war.

이건 냉전시대에 캐나다 왕립 해군에서 복무하셨던 우리 할아버지 이야기야.


My grandpa was stationed on a ship (I believe an Iroquois-class destroyer). They had just set off from Vancouver and were heading down to California for a training exercise with the US navy. The whole crew was naturally very exited to be going to California. My grandpa was a big fan of the beach boys at the time and couldn't wait to get there. The crew was so exited for the trip that at one point one of the higher ups had decided to play the song "California girls" by the beach boys over the ship's intercom.

할아버지는 함선에 배치되어있었어. (아마도 이로쿼이급 구축함) 막 밴쿠버에서 출발해서, 미 해군과의 훈련을 위해 캘리포니아로 가는 중이었지. 승조원 전원이 캘리포니아로 간다는 사실에 들떠있었어.

할아버지는 당시에 비치 보이스(록 밴드)의 열렬한 팬이었고, 캘리포니아 가고 싶어 안달나있었지.

승조원들이 얼마나 들떠있었냐면, 지휘부 중 한명이 함선 인터콤으로 비치 보이스의 “캘리포니아 걸스“를 틀 정도였어.


Just two days after the ship had left port they sighted a soviet submarine and decided to pursue it. they ended up chasing the sub for two months all the way up the west coast to Alaska in the middle of the winter. Eventually they chased the sub away from the Canadian/American coast and returned to Vancouver, but they never got to go to California.

항구를 떠난지 이틀만에 그들은 소련 잠수함을 발견했고, 이를 추격하기로 했었지. 결국 그들은 두달 동안 그 잠수함을 쫓아다녔어, 서해안을 따라 한겨울의 알래스카까지.
