일병, 제독 그리고 수염

 

15 or so years ago, I was a conscript in the Norwegian Navy, serving out of the NATO JHQ North in Stavanger. Military regulations in Norway mandate a daily clean shave, unless otherwise ordered or authorised. In order to get authorisation to abstain from shaving, you need to send in an application, with a reason why, and offer su??pporting evidence as needed.

15년 전 쯤에 난 징병돼서 노르웨이 해군에서 복무하고 있었어. 스타방에르에 있는 나토 북 연합사령부에서 근무했지.

노르웨이 군 규정에 따르면, 별도의 명령이나 허가가 없는 한 매일 면도를 해야해.

면도를 하지 않으려면, 신청서를 제출하고 이유와 관련 증거를 제출해야해.

 

Now, in Judaism, the seven-week period between Pesach and Shavuot is a period of mourning, in which we abstain from shaving. My rabbi wrote a letter to this effect, and I was granted authorisation to abstain from shaving.

유대교에서는 페사흐와 샤부오트 사이 7주 동안이 애도 기간이라 면도를 하지 않아.

내 랍비가 이에 대해 편지를 써주셨고, 덕분에 난 면도 면제 허가를 받았어.

 

Fast forward seven weeks, and I found myself happily bearded. I thought the beard looked good, and wanted to keep it. There was, of course, a process for this, too. Another written application, followed by an inspection by the highest ranking officer of your branch of the service at the base.

7주가 지난 뒤, 내 수염은 풍성하게 자라있었어. 난 수염이 잘 어울린다고 생각했고, 계속 기르고 싶었어. 물론 이에 대한 절차도 따로 있었지.

다시 신청서를 작성하고, 해당 기지에 있는 본인 군별 최고 계급 장교한테 검사를 받아야 했어.

 

Not only was my base the NATO JHQ North, it also served as the national headquarters. The ranking naval officer was Commander, Naval Forces, South of Norway, an OF-7, with a rather impressive beard, to which he owed the moniker "Admiral Redbeard".

내가 있는 기지는 나토 북 연합사령부임과 동시에 노르웨이 국군 사령부였어.

해군 최고 계급 장교는 노르웨이 남부 해군 사령관으로, 투스타였지.

그 분도 워낙 대단한 수염을 갖고 있었기에, 별명은 “붉은수염 제독”이었어.

 

I reported to the Admiral's office, knocked on the hatch, and entered. Standing to attention, I addressed the admiral:

난 제독의 집무실로 가서, 문을 두드리고 집무실로 들어갔어.

The admiral, who until then had been reading whatever report was on his desk, looked up, smiled, and replied:

그때까지 책상 위에 놓인 보고서를 읽고 있던 제독은 고개를 들고 미소 지으면서 대답했어.

 

    Hey; nice beard!

오, 수염 멋진데!

 

I have had a beard ever since, and only been clean shaven once, about two weeks before I met my wife, who tells me that she'll divorce me if I remove it...
