아군 오인사격 사건

1971년, 작전명 듀이협곡 2. 라오스 국경 근처, 꽝찌성 베트남

 

I am the section leader of one of the two Dusters, in a Duster section.

난 더스터 자주대공포 소대에서 더스터 한대의 분대장을 맡고 있었어.

 

We had been out by the Laos border for nearly a month now. Where we had driven into the bush to knock down trees to open up a field of fire now was a fire base with three batteries of 8-inch guns. And for a couple of weeks they were giving regular briefings for NCOs. Being a Sergeant E-5, I just qualified for these briefings. Being naturally curious, I attended these briefings. Our section leader didn't. And since I only talked with him when I had no other choice, his picture of the situation was often out of date.

우린 한달째 라오스 국경 근처에 주둔하고 있었어. 우리가 사계(field of fire)를 확보하기 위해 나무들을 쓰러뜨렸던 곳에는 이제 8인치 포 포대 3개의 화력 진지가 자리하고 있었어.

그리고 몇주 동안 부사관 대상으로 정기적 브리핑이 있었지. 난 당시에 병장(E5)으로, 아슬아슬하게 참석 자격이 주어졌었어. 호기심이 많았던 나는, 브리핑들마다 참석하곤 했지. 우리 소대장은 참석하지 않았어. 그리고 난 꼭 그와 의논해야할 일이 있을때만 대화했기 때문에, 소대장은 상황 파악이 상당히 미흡한 편이었어.

 

It is early afternoon, and all of a sudden a Duster maybe 400 yards north of me opens up on a hill to the east. Maybe 10-15 seconds later, a second Duster is firing on the hill. I'm standing there dumbfounded. A few days earlier (2 or 3?) those of us in the briefing were told there were Americans on that hill! What the heck?

이른 오후였는데, 갑자기 내 북쪽으로 400야드 거리의 더스터가 동쪽에 있는 한 언덕에다 포탄을 쏘기 시작했어. 한 10,15초 뒤에 두번째 더스터가 같은 언덕을 포격했지.

난 어리둥절한 채 서있었어. 2,3일 전에 참가했던 브리핑에서 그 언덕에 미군이 있다고 들었었거든! 대체 무슨 일이지?

 

They weren't firing full automatic, but wham, pause, wham, pause, wham, probably a round every 4 or 5 seconds. Shifting slightly after each round.

걔넨 완전 자동 사격까진 아니었지만, 쾅, 정적, 쾅, 정적, 쾅 이런 식이었어. 4,5초마다 포탄 한발. 한발 쏠때마다 위치 조정하고.

 

And then the perimeter defense line rings. My guys head to the tub, which is what they were supposed to do. I pick up the phone and announce my pr?esence on the party line. The dialog below is as close to what was said as my memory allows.

그러다 경계 병력 주파수로 연락이 왔어. 매뉴얼대로, 분대원들은 더스터로 향했지. 난 전화를 들어서, 전화를 수신했다는걸 알렸어.

아래의 글은 내 기억이 허용하는대로 재구성한 당시 대화 내용이야.

 

My section leader: Sgt A, I haven't seen your track fire in quite a while. I want to see some fireworks. I want you to put 120 rounds on that hill.

내 소대장: 병장 A, 자네 더스터가 발포하는걸 본지 꽤 된거같아. 불꽃놀이 좀 보고싶군. 저 언덕에 120발 꽂아줘.

 

I realize I have two problems with this. First, the last I heard there were Americans on that hill. Second, my section leader was drunk. Again.

난 이 명령에 대해 이의가 있었어. 첫째, 내가 듣기로는 저 언덕에 미군이 있었고, 그리고 두번째, 소대장은 취해있었어. 또다시.

 

Me: Sarge, the last I knew that hill was a no fire zone.

나: 소대장님, 제가 알기로는 저 언덕은 사격 금지 구역입니다.

 

My section leader: Well obviously thatt has been lifted. I want you to fire 120 rounds on that hill. That is a direct order.

소대장: 당연히 해제됐으니까 하는 말이겠지? 저 언덕에 120발 꽂아. 이건 명령이다.

 

Maybe he knows something I don't know? I climb in the tub and tell the guys we are going to fire 72 or so rounds and bury them before the section leader has a chance to count how many shell casings we had. I figured he was drunk enough he wouldn't be able count them as we fired.

내가 모르는 뭔가를 얜 알고 있었나? 난 자주대공포에 올라타서, 분대원들한테 우린 72발 정도 쏠거고, 소대장이 우리 탄피 세러오기 전에 다 묻어버릴거라고 지시했어. 난 걔가 취해있어서 우리가 발사하는 동안 세지 못할거라고 생각했지.

 

Just as we open fire, the two other Dusters go full auto, so after we are on target we do too. After maybe 40 rounds there are a couple of guys running at our track yelling. We stop. The perimeter defense line rings.

우리가 사격을 시작하자마자 이전 두 더스터가 완전 자동 사격으로 돌리길래, 우리도 목표물에 영점 맞춘 후 그대로 따라했어.

한 40발 뒤에 몇 명이 우리 더스터로 소리 지르면서 달려오더라고. 우린 사격을 멈췄지. 그리고 다시 전화가 걸려왔어.

 

I pick up the phone. Just as I'm about to announce my pr?esence, the Battery Commander (O3) of the artillery battery we are attached to starts talking to my section leader (E6) .

난 전화를 받았지. 내가 수신했다는걸 알리려는 순간, 우리가 속한 포대의 대대장(대위)이 내 소대장(하사)에게 다그쳤어.

 

O3: E6, why in the hell are you firing on that hill? There are Americans on that hill!

대위: 하사, 도대체 왜 저 언덕에다 포탄 쏘는거야? 저 언덕엔 미군이 있다고!

 

E6 slight pause to think: Sir, I don't know why Sgt A was firing on the hill.

잠깐 생각한 뒤, 하사/소대장 왈: 대위님, 전 병장 A가 왜 저 언덕에 발포했는지 모르겠습니다.

 

Are you getting an idea of why I didn't like this guy?

내가 왜 이새끼를 싫어했는지 대충 알겠지?

 

나: You #^#@ @#$@% @#$@, you know @#$@# good and well why I was firing on that hill!!!!!

나: 이 개새끼야, 넌 씨발 잘 알고 있잖아 내가 왜 저 언덕에 발포했는지!!!

 

E6: Sgt A, you get off this line right now.

E6: 병장 A, 당장 이 주파수에서 나가!

 

나: And let you lie about me?

나: 니가 나에 대해 거짓말할 수 있게?

 

There was a short pause while I consider going after him with an M-16, and then this:

난 M16 들고 저새끼를 조지러갈까 잠시 진지하게 고민했어. 그러다 누군가 입을 열었지.

 

Voice of my hero: Sir, this is Specialist Hero in the FDC (Fire Direction Center). I have been monitoring the perimeter defense line and heard the conversation between E6 and A before A opened fire.

내 영웅의 목소리: 대위님, 전 사격지휘소(FDC)의 상병 영웅입니다. 전 경계 병력의 주파수를 모니터링하고 있었고, 병장 A가 발포하기 전 소대장과 병장 A 사이의 대화를 들었습니다.

 

So I followed orders and got off the line.

그래서 난 명령대로 통신을 중단했어.

 

A few days later, the mortar unit we fired on came off that hill and stopped in our area before being sent to another location. They told us that the NVA had been dropping mortar fire into ARVN units north of us. They were sent up on that hill to knock out the NVA mortars. They spotted the NVA tubes firing and had started firing on the NVA when the first Duster saw them (the Americans) firing. The rest you know.

며칠 뒤, 우리가 포격했던 언덕에 있었던 박격포 부대가 그 언덕에서 내려와서, 다른 곳으로 보내지기 전에 우리 지역에 잠깐 들렀어.

그들이 말하길, 북베트남군(NVA)이 우리 북쪽의 남베트남군(ARVN) 부대에 박격포를 쏘고 있었대. 그래서 자기들은 북베트남군 박격포를 제거하라는 임무를 받고 그 언덕으로 올라갔다는거야.

그들이 막 북베트남군 박격포를 발견하고 사격을 시작했을 때, 첫번째 더스터가 그들(미군 박격포 부대)를 봤던거지. 나머지 내용은 이미 말한대로야.

 

Well, almost. We killed two of their guys.

뭐, 하나만 빼고. 우리 때문에 걔네 두명 죽었대.

 

I don't know how that SOB got away with it, but he did.

난 소대장 그새끼가 대체 어떻게 빠져나갔는지 모르겠지만, 걘 결국 아무 처벌도 받지 않았어.

 

Edit: I'm pretty sure the squad leader of the first Duster to open up was pulled off the line.
