Fort Bliss: Our unit was in the field six months out of the year. Most of this time was spent in Doña Ana, New Mexico. The weather in this region is sporadic and extreme. You can have 100+ degree heat one day, and monsoon rains the next. We would stage in our fake FOB, and do soldierly things. At night if you were tasked with QRF you had to sleep in or around the Bradleys. My squad had live fire M.O.U.T. (military operation on urban terrain) that day, and got back to the tent just as the rain started. If there's one thing the Army does well, it's make you appreciate the small things. I had a cot, my favorite MRE (tuna fish), a can of Cope, and spades for hours. My ball-busting NCO was even having a good time. The next morning I could hear a clusterf*ck brewing. One at a time the gopher heads started emerging from the sleeping bags. Since we got in late we weren't scheduled till the afternoon. Slowly the noise outside the tent grew. This wasn't your normal Army yelling. Curiosity put on our boots and we headed outside. A crowd had gathered around a Wrecker tugging on a Bradley. The storm had saturated the ground and some of the heavier vehicles were sinking. The excitement didn't seem equated to the situation. Something else was going on. When the vehicle finally pulled away we saw it. A private had sought shelter from the rain under the Bradley. When it sank it crushed him. Strange to see, he looked as if he was still sleeping. Sad.


포트 블리스 기지: 우리 부대는 1년 중 6개월을 야전에서 보냈어. 대부분의 시간을 도냐 아나, 뉴멕시코에서 보냈지. 이 지역의 날씨는 변덕스럽고 극단적이야. 하루는 37도가 넘는 더위였다가, 다음 날엔 장마 같은 비가 내리는 식이었지. 우린 가짜 전방 기지에서 주둔하면서 군인처럼 지냈어. 밤에 신속대응군QRF 역할이면, 브래들리 안이나 주변에서 자야했었지. 그날 우리 분대는 실사격 시가전 훈련을 했었고, 비가 막 내리기 시작할 때쯤 텐트로 돌아왔었어.


군대가 잘하는게 하나 있다면, 그건 작은 행복에도 진심으로 감사할 줄 알게 만든다는거야. 내겐 간이 침대, 제일 좋아하는 전투식량(참치)과 씹는 담배 한캔이 있었고, 몇시간 내내 카드 게임도 할 수 있었어. 날 평소에 괴롭히는 부사관조차 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있었지.


다음날 아침이 되니, 뭔가 난리가 난 것 같은 소리가 들리더라고. 한명한명 침낭에서 머리를 내밀기 시작했어. 전날 늦게 들어왔었던 우리 분대는 오후까지 아무런 스케줄이 없었거든. 근데 텐트 밖의 소란이 점점 더 커지는거야. 이건 평상시에 들리는 고함소리가 아니었어. 궁금했던 우리는 군화를 신고 밖으로 나가봤지. 브래들리를 당기는 견인차 주변에 사람들이 모여있었어. 전날 비바람이 땅을 적셔서, 무거운 차량들 일부가 가라앉았던거야. 근데 내가 보기엔 이 상황은 그리 난리칠만한 일은 아니었어. 뭔가 더 있었던거지.


견인차가 마침내 브래들리를 빼냈을때, 우린 무슨 일이 있었는지 알게 되었어. 한 일병이 브래들리 밑에서 비를 피하려했던거야. 차량이 가라앉으면서 걔를 압사시킨거고. 이상하게도, 여전히 자고 있는것처럼 보였어. 슬픈 일이지.
