Kandahar Airfield: Fresh of the plane, we took a bus to our tent. When I say tent I mean concrete floored, semi-permanent structure...tent. My company was filling out for head count. A couple of Strykers had pulled up and dirty soldiers were pilling out. A couple of guys was on top of the Stryker unmounting the 240 bravo from the RWS. A bang rang out! Personnel scrabbled to the top of the Stryker. The soldier hadn't removed the pin that the RWS uses to pull the trigger, and shot the solder behind him...in the face. Everything stopped. Nobody in my company moved. An NCO now on top, he went straight for the 240 removing the belt of ammo while holding the stunned soldier at arm's length. We didn't see anything else. Our group was filed into a tent. Welcome to Afghanistan, WTF.

칸다하르 공군기지: 비행기에서 내리자마자 버스를 타고 우리 텐트로 갔어. 이때 텐트라는건 콘크리트 바닥의 반영구 ‘텐트’야. 우리 중대는 인원 점검을 하고 있었지.

그때 스트라이커 장갑차 몇대가 오더니, 후줄근한 군인들이 쏟아져나왔어. 몇 명은 스트라이커 위에서 M240 기관총을 원격사격통제시스템RWS에서 제거하기 시작했어.

갑자기 총성이 울렸어! 군인 몇명이 스트라이커 위로 뛰어올라가더라고. 기관총을 제거하던 병사가 원격사격통제시스템RWS이 방아쇠를 당길 때 사용하는 핀을 제거하지 않았고, 뒤에 있던 군인의 얼굴에다 발포했던거야.

순간 모든게 얼어붙었고, 우리 중대 전체가 멈춰섰어. 스트라이커 위에 뛰어올라간 한 부사관이 충격받은 병사를 꽉 붙잡은 채, 곧바로 기관총 탄약 벨트를 제거했어.

우린 그 이후엔 무슨 일이 있었는지 더 이상 보지 못했어. 누가 텐트 안으로 들어가라했거든. 아프가니스탄에 오신걸 환영합니다, 씨발 이런 미친.

 

NTC: My company was doing a night time convoy, we were stopped at our destination, the FOB gate. No one was being let in our out. We had been driving for three hours. Something obviously was up. So we ended up back tracking to another location. Later the next day while playing spades we some medic buddies, I mentioned we got in late because the FOB was closed. The only medic left that I had deployed with said, "Do you why they closed the gate?" I told him I didn't. He told the story of a platoon and thier lost specialist. The night we arrived, one of the E-4 mafia couldn't be found. They searched for hours until under a poncho, a couple of yards away they found him, in the dark where he had chosen to sleep. Earlier that day word at come down from S2 that the "enemy" was planting IEDs on the road. So the Strykers had taken to driving off road. Unfortunately, they didn't see the sleeping SPC. One my S1 battles had to escort and guard the body in the hospital. Whenever the topic came up he got real quiet. We understood and never spoke of it again.

국립훈련센터: 우리 중대는 야간 호송 임무 수행 중이었고, 우리 목적지인 전방 기지 출입문에 도착했어. 근데 아무도 내보내거나 들여보내주지 않더라고. 3시간 운전해서 왔는데 말이지. 분명히 또 무슨 일이 있었던거야. 그래서 우린 결국 다른 곳로 돌아갔어.

다음날 친한 의무병들이랑 카드 치다가, 어제 전방 작전 기지가 폐쇄된 바람에 밤늦게 도착했다고 말했어. 함께 파병갔던 의무병들 중 마지막으로 남은 의무병 친구가 “왜 어제 문닫았는지 알아?”라더라고. 난 모른다했지. 그러더니 걘 어떤 소대가 상병 하나를 잃어버린 이야기를 해줬어.

우리가 도착한 밤에, E4(상병) 한명이 행방불명됐다더라고. 몇시간 동안 찾아다닌 끝에, 기지 근처의 어두운 곳에서 판초 우의를 덮은채 잠든 상병이 발견됐어. 그날 일찍, 정보과에서 “적군”이 도로에 IED를 설치하고 있다는 정보가 내려왔었대. 그래서 스트라이커 장갑차들은 오프로드 운전을 했었고. 안타깝게도 아무도 잠자는 상병을 미처 보지 못했던거지.

인사과에 근무하던 내 친구는 시체를 병원으로 옮기고 지키는 임무를 맡았다더라. 이 주제가 나올때마다 걘 매우 조용해졌어. 다들 눈치채고 다시는 그 일을 언급하지 않았지.

 

I don't write these things with morbid intent. It helps me to remember and in some ways look at the situations with a new brain.

불쾌한 의도로 글을 쓰는건 아니야. 내가 겪었던 일을 기억하고, 어떨 때는 새로운 시각으로 상황을 바라보는데 도움이 되더라고.
