부장(XO)의 낚시하는 방법

 

During my ship's 2018-2019 deployment to 5th fleet (Arabian Sea area) we got a new XO. I happened to be able to speak with him for a bit while on watch one day in port before we went underway again. He struck me as a good-natured and polite gentleman which I correctly thought boded well for the crew.

2018~19년 내 함정이 제5함대(아라비아해 지역)로 배치되었을 때, 함정에 새 부장(XO)이 왔어. 출항하기 전에, 내가 항구에서 당직 설 때 그와 잠깐 대화를 나눌 기회가 있었어. 난 그때 그가 성격 좋고 예의바른 신사라는 인상을 받았고, 승조원들이 좋은 지휘관을 만났다고 생각했지. 내 예상은 적중했어.

 

Fast forward a few weeks. We're underway and I'm taking a breather on the flight deck enjoying a bit of sun and I notice the only other people outside are the aft lookout and XO. Now, the aft lookout has one purpose in life: keep comms with the other lookouts & the bridge and report if they see anything suspicious or someone who fell overboard. The XO is standing a few feet from aft lookout with a fishing pole hanging off the railing. I hear them chatting and assume it's cordial conversation, but as I pay more attention I realize the XO is giving the lookout orders:

몇주 뒤, 우린 항해 중이었고, 난 비행갑판에서 잠시 햇볕 쬐면서 쉬고 있었어. 밖에 있는 사람은 후방 경계병이랑 부장 뿐이었어. 후방 경계병의 유일한 임무는 다른 경계병들과 함교와 통신을 유지하고, 누군가 바다에 빠지거나 수상한 일이 보이면 보고하는 것뿐이야.

부장은 후방 경계병으로부터 살짝 떨어진 거리에 서서 낚싯대를 드리우고 있었어. 그들이 대화하는 소리가 들리길래 처음엔 일상 대화하는건가 싶었는데, 좀더 들어보니 부장은 경계병한테 지시를 내리고 있었어.

 

"Take it down to two knots."

“2노트로 줄여.”

"Ah, nevermind. Bring her back up to five."

“아, 아니다. 다시 5노트로 올려.”

"Slow it down to two knots."

“2노트로 줄여.”

 

And then it becomes clear to me. The XO, based on if he thinks he's caught a fish, is single handedly deciding the speed of the ship. He is having the lookout relay speed changes to the bridge, and who's going to tell him "no"? Certainly not the E-2 on the bridge he's giving orders to. I didn't stay much longer since I had work to do but I sure as hell got a good chuckle out of it.

난 그제서야 상황을 파악했지. 부장은 물고기가 낚인 것 같으면, 속도를 줄였던거야. 후방 경계병은 그한테 받은 속도 변경 명령을 함교에 전달하고 있었고.

누가 안된다고 하겠어? 함교에서 명령 전달받는 이등병이?

난 할일이 있어서 오래 머물진 않았지만, 진짜 웃긴 광경이었어.

 

Since then he has become the CO and has earned nothing but respect from the crew, and still has a sense of humor.

그후 그는 함장으로 진급했고, 승조원들로부터 존경받고 있으며, 여전히 유머스러우셔.
