Grandad scams German soldiers transferring to Norway

One of the favourite pastimes of people in northern Sweden during WWII besides smuggling goods and people across the Swedish-Finnish border was screwing with German soldiers transferring to Norway via the Swedish railway. The view was that while parliament in stockholm may have given the Germans the go-ahead to use the railway no one asked the people up north so the Germans were fair game for theft, scams and sabotage.

스웨덴-핀란드 국경을 넘어서 물건과 사람들을 밀수하는 것 외에, 2차 세계대전 당시 북 스웨덴 사람들이 즐겼던 취미 중 하나는 바로 스웨덴 철도를 타고 노르웨이로 이동하는 독일 군인들을 골탕먹이는거였어.

스톡홀름에 있는 스웨덴 의회가 독일인들에게 철도 사용을 허가했을진 몰라도, 아무도 북 스웨덴 사람들 의견은 물어보지 않았기 때문에 그들이 보기엔 독일군은 도둑질, 사기와 사보타주의 정당한 표적이었어.

 

When the trains carrying German troops stopped to fill up on water and sand the officers would often allow soldiers to step off the train for a few minutes to stretch their legs. Gramps, being bored and broke, decided to do something about that, so he put on his homeguard uniform, borrowed his dad’s friend’s old conductor cap and would loiter around where the trains stop to fill up. When a train full of Germans stopped and the soldiers trooped out he would walk up and down the length of the train asking tired-looking soldiers to see their tickets and documentation.

독일군을 실은 열차가 물과 모래를 보충하기 위해 멈출 때, 장교들은 종종 군인들이 역에 내려서 쉴 수 있게 했어.

돈없고 심심했던 우리 할아버지는 이를 이용해 뭔가를 하기로 결심했지. 할아버지는 향토방위대 제복을 입고, 아버지 친구의 낡은 차장 모자를 빌린 다음 열차가 멈추는 곳 근처를 어슬렁거렸어.

독일군을 가득 실은 열차가 멈추고 군인들이 내리면, 할아버지는 열차 근처를 돌아다니면서 지쳐보이는 군인들에게 기차표와 신분증을 보여달라고 요구했지.

 

At the time tickets needed to be stamped by the conductor at every stop to be valid, so what gramps did was check the stamps and would tell soldiers that they were missing an important stamp and thus would not be allowed aboard the train again. He would then, in broken German, tell the soldier that being left behind when the train was done with the resupply would count as desertion, but he could probably forget about the missing stamp and let the soldier board the train again for say some chocolate/booze/coffee/smokes or similar.

당시에는 기차표가 유효하려면, 매 정거장마다 차장의 도장을 받아야했어.

그래서 할아버지는 기차표를 확인하면서, 중요한 도장이 누락되어 있어 열차에 다시 탑승하게 할 수 없다고 통보했지. 할아버지는 서툰 독일어로 독일 병사들에게 열차가 보급을 마치고 떠날 때 열차에 타있지 않으면, 탈영으로 간주될거라고 했어.

대신 자기한테 초콜렛/술/커피/담배 같은걸 주면, 빠진 도장에 대해 눈감아주고 열차를 다시 탈 수 있게 해주겠다 했어.

 

Most soldiers actually payed up without even checking if the “missing stamp” was needed or not with only a very few soldiers calling his bluff. This scam enabled gramps to eke out a decent living selling the smokes and booze to his homeguard mates during a time when there weren't much work to be had and money was scarce.

대부분의 군인들은 “도장”이 진짜 필요한지 확인도 안하고 할아버지한테 값을 지불했어. 극소수의 군인들만 할아버지를 의심하고 계략을 간파했지.

할아버지는 이렇게 사기쳐서 받은 물건들을 향토방위대 동료들한테 팔아치웠고, 일자리가 없고 돈이 부족했던 시기에 꽤나 짭잘한 수입을 올릴 수 있었어.
