Nimitz Startles Reporters with Communique of Victory off Korea, Adds It was in 1592.

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz gave war correspondents a useful lesson in weather today and in so doing staggered them with the reading of a communique that, until he came to the last few lines, sounded very much like the No.1 story of the Pacific war.

체스터 W. 니미츠 제독은 오늘 기자들에게 날씨에 대한 유익한 교훈을 알려줌과 동시에 마지막 몇줄을 읽기 전까지는 마치 태평양 전쟁의 특종 기사감으로 착각할만한 공보문을 읽음으로써 기자들을 놀라게 했다.


He was talking about the typhoon season in the Western Pacific, illustrating its effect on naval warfare. The season is on now and will last through December and its inevitability affects both the Japanese and American war planning. The Admiral then picked up a sheet of paper and said he had a communique in which the correspondents would be interested. He read:

그는 서태평양의 태풍 시즌에 대해 이야기했으며, 이것이 해전에 미치는 영향을 설명했다.

“Powerful allied naval forces have attacked a portion of the Japanese fleet lying at anchor near the entrance to Fusan harbor on the southeast coast of Korea. Twenty-six of the eighty ships pre.sent in the harbor were set afire and the remainder were dispersed.

“In a later engagement more than seventy Japanese vessels, including warships and transports, were encountered by the allied fleet and were sunk.

“이어진 교전에서 동맹군 함대는 전함과 수송선을 포함한 70척 이상의 일본 선박과 마주쳤고, 격침시켰다.


“The devastating blow which has been dealt to the Japanese fleet has isolated the enemy armies in Korea and has cut them off from their home bases.”

“일본 함대에 가해진 이 치명적인 타격은 한국에 있는 적군을 고립시키고 본국 기지와의 연결을 차단하였다.”


The Admiral then added:

“The naval action, which stretched over a period of several days, was broken off in the mid-summer of the year 1592. The naval forces were under the command of the Korean Admiral Yi Sun-Sin.”

After the laughter subsided, the Admiral pointed out that Japanese war history was not in the past always victorious. Then he told how the Japanese mainland was twice nearly invaded around the year 1200 by the forces of Kubla Khan. In both instances typhoons saved the Japanese, destroying the approaching fleets.

웃음이 가라앉은 뒤, 제독은 일본의 전쟁 역사가 매번 승리로 끝난 것은 아니었다고 지적했다.

이어 그는 1200년경 쿠빌라이 칸의 군대가 두 차례 일본 본토를 침략할 뻔 했으나, 두번 모두 태풍이 접근 중인 함대를 파괴한 덕에 일본이 무사했다고 덧붙였다.
