I'm a squad leader on a Duster in a 2-vehicle Duster section.

난 더스터 2대짜리 소대에서 더스터 분대장을 맡고 있었어.

 

One afternoon we were headed back to base. After 50 years, I can't remember what we had been doing that morning to be away from base, but it really has no bearing on this story. On this occasion, as was the case most of the time when we were out like this, our section leader was back at the battery doing something too important to come out to the field.

어느 오후, 우리는 기지로 복귀 중이었지.

50년이 지난 지금, 우리가 그날 아침에 기지를 떠나서 뭘하고 있었는지는 기억이 나지 않아. 하지만 이 이야기와는 별 상관이 없으니 괜찮아. 

그때도 대부분의 경우와 마찬가지로, 우리 소대장은 너무나도 중요한 일을 하느라 현장에 나오지 않고 포대에 남아있었어.

We were passing a small river or large creek, when one of the guys up in the tub starts yelling. He wants us to stop. I signaled the driver to stop our track, and our sister track stopped about 50 feet back.

우린 작은 강인가 큰 개울을 지나고 있었는데, 더스터 위쪽에 타있던 녀석들 중 한명이 소리를 지르기 시작했어. 우리 보고 멈추라 하고 있었지. 난 운전병에게 더스터를 멈추라고 신호를 보냈고, 나머지 더스터도 대략 우리 15m 뒤에 멈췄어.

 

The guys in the tub want us to go fishing. If you have ever eaten C-rations day after day, you will understand how badly we didn't want to eat them that night. If we supplied the fish, there were some ARVN cooks where we would be stationed that evening that would cook rice with fish sauce for us in exchange for some of our fish. They had done it before.

더스터 위쪽에 타있던 놈들은 낚시를 가고 싶어했어. 만약 당신이 며칠 내내 C-레이션만 먹어봤다면, 우리가 그날 밤 그걸 얼마나 먹고 싶지 않았는지 이해할 수 있을거야.

그날 저녁 우리가 주둔할 곳에는, 우리가 생선만 갖다준다면 생선을 받는 대신 피시소스를 곁들인 밥을 만들어줄 남베트남군 요리사들이 있었어. 이전에도 그렇게 한 적이 있었지.

 

The squad leader from the other track came trotting up to find out why I had stopped. Once he was there, I explained our plan to him. Since our section leader wasn't around to tell us we couldn't, we proceeded to get ready while the other squad leader went back to his track to let them know we would be eating rice with fish sauce tonight and not C-rations.

다른 더스터의 분대장은 우리가 왜 멈췄는지 알아보기 위해 찾아왔어. 난 그에게 우리 계획을 설명했지.

우리한테 안된다고 할 소대장도 없었기에, 우린 낚시 준비를 시작했어. 다른 분대장은 자기 더스터로 돌아가서 오늘 저녁엔 C-레이션이 아니라 피시소스를 곁들인 밥을 먹게 될거라고 알렸지.

 

Both tracks began gathering their fishing gear. Which consisted of hand grenades. Pull the pin on a hand grenade, toss it into the river, and wait for the bang. About half of the time a few fish would float to the surface. We would wade or swim out and gather our feast. It didn't take many fish to make fish sauce, so we only needed a few.

두 더스터 모두 낚시 도구를 준비하기 시작했어. 낚시 도구란 바로 수류탄이었어. 핀을 뽑아서 강에 던지고, 터지는걸 기다리는거지. 대략 1/2 확률로 물고기 몇마리가 수면 위로 떠오르곤 했어. 그 다음 물 속으로 들어가서 수확을 건져오는 방식이었지. 피시소스를 만드는데는 물고기가 많이 필요하지 않았기 때문에, 그냥 몇마리만 있으면 충분했어.

 

But we discovered a problem. We were a little short of hand grenades. This was a bit unusual, because the guys were very talented at stealing munitions. But for some reason we only had 4 hand grenades (the number we were authorized) and I wasn't willing to use them.

하지만 문제가 하나 있었어. 수류탄이 부족했었던거야. 이건 의외였지, 왜냐하면 우리 소대원들은 탄약을 훔치는 달인이었거든. 여튼 어떤 이유에서인지, 우리에겐 단 4개의 수류탄(허가된 개수)만 있었고, 난 그걸 쓰고 싶지 않았어.

 

Walking back to our sister track, I learned that they were in the same position. I headed back to my track practicing my curse words, when I had an idea. We had another source of grenades, and I was pretty sure we had extras.

다른 더스터로 가보니, 그들도 우리랑 같은 상황이더라고. 욕을 내뱉으면서 내 더스터로 돌아가는 중이었는데, 한가지 아이디어가 떠올랐지. 우리에겐 또다른 종류의 수류탄이 있었고, 내가 알기론 분명히 여분이 있었어.

 

So when I get back to my track I have the driver check behind my seat to see how many grenades we have for the M-79 grenade launcher. A quick check, and we have way more of these grenades than we are supposed to have. Enough that I have no problem using a few. Did I mention that I REALLY didn't want to eat C-rations that night?

그래서 난 내 더스터로 돌아와서, 운전병한테 내 좌석 뒤에 M-79 유탄발사기용 수류탄이 몇 개 있는지 확인해보라고 했어.

대충 확인해보니, 원래 갖고 있어야할 개수보다 훨씬 많은 유탄이 있었어. 몇 개 써도 문제없을만큼 충분했지. 내가 그날 밤에 C-레이션 진짜로 먹기 싫었다고 말했었나?

 

The M-79 grenade launcher was pretty cool. When you fired it, you could watch the grenade arc though the air to its target. It was fun to watch, and made a neat "whump" sound when the grenade detonated. It combined so many things that make 20 year old kids excited. This would be even better than using hand grenades!

M-79 유탄발사기는 꽤나 멋진 무기였어. 그걸 쏘면, 유탄이 포물선을 그리며 목표물로 날아가는걸 지켜볼 수 있었지. 보는 재미도 있었고, 유탄이 터질 때 나는 “쿵” 소리도 멋졌어. 20살짜리 애들을 흥분시킬만한 여러 요소들을 한군데 결합해놓은 것이었지. 이건 그냥 수류탄 던지는 것보다도 더 멋질거야!

 

With the M-79 in hand, I got ready to fire. No rush, so I took my time. I estimated the range to the river, which was about 15 feet lower than the road surface, and actually made the appropriate adjustment to the rear sight instead of simply guessing.

난 M-79를 들고 발사 준비를 했어. 서두를 필요도 없었기에, 여유롭게 했어. 도로 표면보다 약 5미터 낮은 강까지의 거리를 추정했고, 단순히 추측하지 않고 후방 조준기를 제대로 조정하기까지 했어.

 

Next, I checked the other side of the river. It was habit by now, you didn't want friendlies down range. There were some ARVNs around the bend in the river washing up, but they were a full quarter-mile downstream so we were cool. I took careful aim at the river, squeezed the trigger, and watched the grenade arc toward the river.

그 다음에 난 강 건너편을 확인했어. 이젠 습관이었어, 사격 범위 내에 아군이 있으면 안됐으니까.

강의 굽이 주변에 몇몇 남베트남군들이 씻고 있었지만, 그들은 우리가 있는 곳으로부터 하류 400m 지점에 있었기에 거리는 충분했어.

난 강을 향해 신중히 조준했고, 방아쇠를 당겼어. 유탄이 강을 향해 날아가는걸 지켜봤지.

 

And then I watched the grenade skip off the surface of the water and arc into the jungle on the other side of the river. This time, the "whump" sound wasn't nearly as neat.

그렇게 난 유탄이 물 표면에서 튕겨나서 강 건너편의 정글로 날아가는 것을 지켜봤어.

이번에는 "쿵" 소리가 하나도 멋있지 않았어.

 

Around the bend the ARVNs started screaming and within about 10 seconds they had opened up with M-16s. In the next 10 seconds I was back on the track and we were leaving the scene of the crime to the sound of M-16s and now some grenades. If I didn't know better, I would have thought there were two sides to their firefight.

굽이 주변에 있던 남베트남군들은 소리를 질렀고, 10초 뒤 그들은 M16을 마구 쏴대기 시작했어. 사격 개시 10초 뒤 난 다시 더스터에 탑승해있었고, 우린 M16와 수류탄 소리를 뒤로 한 채 범죄 현장을 떠났어.

사건의 전말을 몰랐다면, 난 이 총격전에 적군이 있었다고 생각했을거야.

 

We ate C-rations that night, and I had to eat crow for dessert.

우린 그날 밤 C-레이션을 먹어야했고, 난 체면을 제대로 구겼지.
