How my father-in-law spent his enlistment.

장인어른의 1946년 군 복무 이야기

 

My father-in-law grew up in Arkansas. He loved being on the water. When he turned eighteen he enlisted in the Navy. He said because he wanted to be assigned to a ship. The year was 1946.

제 장인어른은 아칸소 주에서 자랐습니다. 그분은 물에서 노는걸 정말 좋아하셨고, 열여덟 살이 되었을 때 해군에 자원입대했습니다. 함정에 배치받고 싶었거든요. 때는 1946년이었습니다.

 

He went to basic at San Diego, California. When he completed basic and everyone was getting their assignments, he was looking for a shipboard assignment. That didn’t happen.

장인은 캘리포니아 샌디에고에서 기초군사훈련을 받았습니다. 훈련을 마친 뒤 동기들은 다들 자대 배치를 받았고, 장인어른은 배에 타는 보직을 기대하고 있었습니다. 하지만 그 기대는 이루어지지 않았죠.

 

My father-in-law was assigned to the rec center right there at the same base where he went for basic. He said he started asking why he was chosen for that duty. Turns out, the base commander was from the same town in Arkansas and said he wanted someone assigned to the base from home. My father-in-law said he requested several times to be transferred to a ship. The base commander denied the transfer every time.

장인은 기초군사훈련을 받았던 그 기지 내의 레크리에이션 센터로 발령되었습니다. 그분은 자신이 왜 그 보직에 배치되었는지 묻고 다니기 시작했죠. 알고 보니, 그 기지의 사령관이 장인어른과 같은 마을 출신이었던겁니다. 고향 사람이 기지에 한명쯤은 있었으면 했던거죠. 장인은 여러 차례 함정으로의 전출을 요청했지만, 기지 사령관은 매번 그 요청을 반려했습니다.

 

My father-in-law spent his entire enlistment at that rec center.

He did not reenlist.

장인은 결국 군 복무 기간 내내 레크리에이션 센터에서 근무했고, 복무연장하지 않았습니다.
