Meeting a Medal of Honor recipient

명예훈장 수여자 만난 썰 (존 카바이아니)

 

In the first half of my .mil career, I was a helicopter mechanic & aircrew in the Marines. For several years, my squadron had provided support to a USMC-oriented charitable organization’s annual fundraiser/gala.

제 군생활의 전반 동안, 전 미 해병대에서 헬리콥터 정비병이자 승무원으로 복무했습니다. 그리고 제가 속한 비행대대는 몇년째 미 해병대 관련 자선단체의 연례 모금행사/갈라를 지원해오고 있었죠.

 

In the summer of 2001, I was part of the aircrew that landed a CH-53E in the parking lot of the hotel where the gala was being held. It was a full weekend of work - landing Friday afternoon and positioning the aircraft for static display, Saturday morning & afternoon manning said static display, Saturday night the actual gala, then the departure and flyby of Sunday’s golf tournament.

2001년 여름, 저는 그 해 갈라가 열리는 호텔 주차장에 CH-53E 헬리콥터를 착륙시킨 승무원 중 한명이었습니다.

주말 내내 바빴죠. 금요일 오후에 기체를 착륙시키고, 전시용으로 배치하고. 토요일 오전과 오후에는 전시된 기체 옆을 지키고. 토요일 밤에는 갈라 행사, 그리고 일요일에는 출발 및 골프 대회 저공비행까지.

 

As a lowly Sergeant, I was not invited to the gala itself (which was fine by me; far too eagles and stars in the room for my tastes), but I did get to meet some of the dozen or so Medal of Honor recipients from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam (all branches, not just Marines) that had been invited and attended the 2001 event. Us enlisted swine had dinner in the hotel bar and started drinking, and were well on our way to a good time when the gala ended and the dress uniforms & formal wear came off.

겨우 병장이었던 저는, 갈라 자체에는 초대받지 못했습니다. (저야 좋았죠, 그 행사장엔 대령과 장성급 장교가 너무 많아서 부담스러웠거든요) 하지만 그 대신, 행사에 초대받은 열댓 명의 명예훈장(Medal of Honor) 수훈자들을 뵐 수 있었습니다. (2차세계대전, 한국전쟁, 베트남전쟁에 참전했던, 해병대만이 아닌 모든 군종) 저희 병사따리들은 호텔 바에서 저녁을 먹고 술을 마시면서 슬슬 취해가는 참이었는데, 갈라가 끝나고 정복과 예복을 벗은 그분들이 바에 오셨습니다.

 

Let me tell you… they may have moved a little slower, but several of the MOH recipients (the WWII vets were all well into their 70s at this point) could still push it up pretty hard. A good time was had by all. Hearing MOH recipients shit-talking each other’s awards around the bar while toasting each other was hilarious, and a little surreal.

좀 느리게 움직이긴 했지만(2차 세계대전 참전용사들은 이미 70대 중후반이었죠), 몇몇 수훈자분들은 여전히 엄청난 주량을 자랑하셨습니다. 다들 너무나도 즐거운 시간을 보냈죠. 눈앞에서 명예훈장 수훈자들이 서로의 훈장을 놀려댐과 동시에 건배를 하는 모습은 웃기면서도 믿기 어려운 광경이었습니다.

 

Well after midnight, after the brass and the majority of the MOH recipients had called it a night, our group of 4-5 enlisted Marines were still rolling along quite nicely around the bar. One recipient was still hanging with us. He had insisted that we just call him Jon, and as the night had progressed we learned that this was retired US Army SGM Jon Cavaiani. A genuinely nice guy who simply. would. not. allow us to buy him drinks, or let us buy our own drinks. Jon did shots with us, deflected our questions about his Medal with “I had a couple bad days, followed by a couple bad years.” and no other details, but asked us all about ourselves, our helicopter, and our jobs in the Corps.

자정이 훌쩍 넘은 시점, 장교들과 대부분의 명예훈장 수훈자들이 자리를 뜬 뒤에도, 저희 네다섯명의 해병대 병사들은 여전히 바에서 신나게 술을 마시고 있었습니다.

수훈자 한분은 그때까지도 저희와 함께 계셨죠. 그분은 자신을 그냥 ‘존’이라고 불러달라고 하셨고, 저흰 술을 같이 마시면서 그분이 미 육군 원사 존 카바이아니라는걸 알게 되었습니다. 정말로 친절한 분이었고, 저희가 그분의 술값을 내거나 저희 술값을 내는걸 절대로 허락하지 않으셨습니다.

존은 저희와 함께 술을 마셨고, 자신의 명예훈장에 대한 자세한 이야기는 피하셨습니다. 그냥 “안좋은 날 이틀 정도, 그리고 이어서 안좋은 년 2년 정도”라고만 하실 뿐이었죠. 대신 저희와 저희가 해병대에서 하는 일, 그리고 저희 기체에 대해 많은 질문을 하셨습니다.

 

At some point, a Marine with the skid kids (Hueys & Cobras - they brought one each to the event for static display) wandered into our area and loudly coin-checked our group. We all drunkenly scrambled to slap our coins on the bar in the time allotted… then a Medal of Honor was slapped on the bar. A collective “Oh shit…” was said by all, then one of the event organizers (“Daddy Wags”… IYKYK) a few seats down the bar from us yelled “For God’s sake Jon, do you carry that thing to the bathroom, too?”. Jon replied “I trust my pockets a whole lot more than a hotel room safe, especially in this state!”… which immediately had the entire bar roaring with laughter. The skid kid got our group another round of drinks (which Jon immediately signaled the bartender to put on his tab), and we had a nice toast whose words I unfortunately can no longer recall.

그러다 술 마시던 도중, 다른 헬리콥터 대대(AH-1 휴이&코브라) 소속 해병 한명이 저희쪽으로 와서 코인 체크라고 외쳤습니다.

(코인 체크라 외치면 제한 시간 내에 갖고 있는 아무 코인 1개를 탁자나 바 카운터에 올려놓아야함. 시간 내에 코인을 제시하지 못하면 모두한테 술 한잔씩 사야함. 전원이 코인을 제시하면, 처음에 코인 체크를 외친 사람이 술을 사야함)

저희는 술에 취한 채 허겁지겁 바 카운터에다 코인을 올려놓고 있었는데…갑자기 웬 명예훈장이 쾅 하고 바 카운터에 놓였습니다. 모두가 “오 미친…”이라 내뱉었고, 행사 주최자 중 한명(별명 “Daddy Wags”, 전직 야구선수)은 “존, 설마 화장실 갈때도 그걸 갖고 다녀?”라고 외쳤습니다.

존은 “이런 상태에선 호텔 금고보다 내 주머니가 훨씬 더 믿을만해!”라 답했고, 호텔 바는 웃음바다가 되었습니다. AH-1 대대 소속 해병은 저희에게 술을 한 잔씩 쐈고(존은 곧바로 바텐더에게 자기 계산서에 추가하라고 신호를 보냈죠) 저희는 멋진 건배를 했습니다. 아쉽게도 정확한 멘트는 이제 기억이 나지 않지만요.

 

What I do recall, though, was a no-shit Medal of Honor sitting on the bar less than a foot from my hand, as I was sitting next to Jon at the time. I didn’t know at that time what Jon had done, but the knowledge of the sort of actions that lie behind any modern-era award of the Medal of Honor pushed through my substantial inebriation and sobered me up considerably. At some point, I asked Jon if I could pick up his Medal, and he said something along the lines of “Yeah, go ahead, it’s not like you’re gonna break it!”. It sounds cheesy as hell, but that handful of metal and fabric that physically embodies the Medal of Honor had a weight to it that defied its size. Knowing that I was partying with, and sitting next to, the person who lived through the actions that resulted in the award of the MOH I was holding had a gravity that I can’t adequately describe.

대신에 제가 또렷이 기억하는 것은, 명예훈장이 제 손 바로 옆에 놓여있었다는겁니다. 전 존 바로 옆에 앉아있었거든요. 그 당시에는 존이 어떤 사유로 명예훈장을 수여받았는지 몰랐지만, 그걸 받기 위해 대략 어떤 공적을 세워야하는지를 알고 있었던지라 전 순식간에 술에서 깼습니다. 전 존과 대화하면서, 명예훈장을 한번 들어봐도 되냐고 물었습니다. 그랬더니 그분은 “그래 한번 들어봐, 그런다고 부서질 것도 아닌데 뭐!”라고 하셨죠. 좀 오글거리는 말이지만, 천과 금속으로 이루어진 그 손바닥만한 명예훈장로부터 크기에 비해 무언가 엄청난 무게감이 전해졌습니다. 명예훈장을 수여받을만한 일련의 사건들을 살아남은 분이, 제 옆에서 저와 함께 술을 마시고 있다는걸 알게 되자 새삼스레 제대로 형언할 수 없는 엄숙함이 느껴졌습니다.

 

As we all know, things got a little hectic later that summer, and it ended up being a couple years before I remembered to look up Jon’s bio and MOH citation. To say I was blown away would be an understatement.

다들 아시다시피, 그 해 여름 이후에 (2001년) 일이 꽤나 바빴고, 전 몇 년이 지난 뒤에야 존의 이력과 명예훈장 수훈 사유를 찾아보았습니다. 놀랍다는 말로는 부족할 정도였죠.

 

Tonight marks the anniversary of Jon’s first day of nearly two years in captivity in North Vietnam.

오늘은, 존이 그 옛날 북베트남에서 거의 2년 간의 포로 생활을 시작했었던 그 날입니다.
