어머니가 걱정하신다는 소식을 듣고 최근에 겪었던 공중전에 대해 편지를 쓴 18살짜리 1차세계대전 조종사

 

Hello everyone, I have spent some time digitizing my families old WW1 letters. This is just one of many which I found interesting and would like to share with you. Apologies if this is not the right subreddit for it. I thought this one was funny considering he knew his mother was fussing about him, yet he then goes on to scare her with these tales of immense danger!

안녕하세요, 전 최근에 저희 집안에 전해내려오던 1차세계대전 시기 편지들을 디지털화하는 작업을 해왔습니다. 그 중 흥미로운 편지 하나를 여기에 공유하고 싶어요. 여기가 적절하지 않은 게시판이 아닐까봐 미리 양해를 구합니다. 이 편지를 쓴 사람은 자기 어머니가 걱정을 하고 있다는걸 잘 알면서도, 오히려 스릴 넘치는 무용담을 적었다는게 재밌더라구요. 

This letter is from Roger, my great-great-uncle, who was at the time aged 18. He died on the 7th May, 1917, aged 19, after being shot down over France in his S.E.5. I have many more of these if anyone would like to read them, with many from his brother (my great-grandad) who was a Captain in the infantry at the same time.

이 편지는 로저, 제 종증조부께서 18세 때 어머니께 쓴 것입니다. 로저는 1917년 5월 7일, 프랑스 상공에서 S.E.5 전투기를 조종하던 도중 격추당해 19세에 전사했습니다. 

이런 편지가 꽤나 많아요. 같은 시기에 로저의 형제(제 증조할아버지)가 보병 장교(대위)로 복무하면서 썼던 편지도 다수 있습니다.

My dear mum,

사랑하는 어머니께,

Thanks very much for both of your letters. I am very sorry to see that you are apparently getting anxious or fussed or something of the sort about me, at least so I gather from your first letter. I was rather afraid that my letters giving rather thrilling accounts of my doings might have that effect on you, so shall have to confine myself to telling you about what other people are doing unless you promise not to do it again! This week for instance I have got a real thrilling adventure to tell you but don’t know if I ought to. Either I must make my letters uninteresting and stop you fussing or make them interesting and make you fuss. But you will probably fuss anyhow so here goes!

편지 두 통 잘 받았습니다. 어머니께서 저에 대해 많이 걱정하시는 것 같아서 안타까워요. 적어도 첫 편지를 읽고 그렇게 느꼈습니다. 제가 너무 스릴 넘치는 무용담을 쓰면 왠지 그럴 것 같긴했어요. 앞으로는 다른 사람들 이야기만 적어서 보내야할까봐요. 어머니께서 앞으로 너무 걱정하지 않겠다고 약속하셔야 제 이야기를 담아 보낼거에요! 이번 주에도 매우 스릴 넘치는 사건이 하나 있었는데, 이걸 말씀드려야할지 모르겠네요. 편지를 재미없게 써서 어머니 걱정을 줄이던가, 아니면 재미있게 써서 걱정을 키우던가 둘 중에 하나네요. 하지만 어머니는 어차피 걱정하실테니 그냥 말씀드릴게요!


I and Capt Summers were on patrol the other day and had nearly finished when we saw three suspicious looking specks in the sky away up north of our beat. We immediately set off after them and as we got nearer knew that they were Huns. As soon as they saw us one of them dived away home in the usual way but we got up to the other two, one of which we tackled. I fired a magazine at him at fairly long range and thought I hit him. I was just going to change my magazine when suddenly up from behind and below us came the other Hun, before I knew where he was, he had hit us properly, hitting the propeller and piercing the petrol tank.

며칠 전 써머스 대위와 전 순찰을 마무리 짓고 있었는데, 북쪽 멀리에 의심스러운 점 세개를 포착했습니다. 우린 곧바로 그들을 쫓았고, 가까워지자 그들이 독일군 비행기임을 알게 됐습니다. 우리를 보자마자, 그 중 하나는 늘 그렇듯 바로 도망가 버렸어요. 나머지 두 대한테 따라잡은 우리는, 그 중 한대와 교전을 시작했습니다. 전 꽤나 먼거리에서 발포했는데, 맞혔다고 생각했습니다. 탄창을 막 갈아끼우려는 순간, 갑자기 제 뒤쪽 아래에서 다른 독일군 비행기가 나오더니, 그놈 위치를 파악하기도 전에 우릴 제대로 맞혀버렸어요. 프로펠러가 피격당했고, 연료탱크에도 구멍이 나버렸습니다. 


So there we were, helpless at 9000ft six miles behind the German lines with a Hun on our tail firing lead into us as fast as he could shoot. All we could do was to glide for our own lines and not fast either or we would not be able to reach our own side. How on earth he didn’t manage to finish us off I don’t know. I certainly thought we were for it. I couldn’t get at the Hun who was behind us with my gun as he was below our tail and we couldn’t turn. I ought to have got a ‘blighty’ but although the bullets passed very near me, one even stitching in my leather coat, none touched me or Summers. At last we saw the lines getting closer and closer and the question was which side will it be? Summers shouted to me to get ready to jump into the trenches as he thought we should just get into our own trenches. As a matter of fact, we got fairly well clear and didn’t touch ground till we were about 800 yards behind our lines. We landed alright and climbed leisurely out, congratulating ourselves on our escape, when we heard the plaintive whine of a shell, then another and they soon began to burst all round us. That made us move in a hurry and we ran for a little village near by which turned out to be a brigade headquarters and quite a nice safe spot.

그렇게 우리 비행기는 상공 9000피트 독일군 전선 6마일 안쪽에서, 아무런 반격을 하지못한 채 총탄을 퍼붓는 독일군 비행기한테 쫓기는 상황에 놓였죠. 우리가 할 수 있는건 그저 아군 전선을 향해 활공하는 것 뿐이었습니다. 아군 쪽에 도달을 못할까봐 활공 속도도 너무 높일 수가 없었습니다. 그 독일군이 우릴 왜 마무리 짓지 못했는지는 지금도 모르겠습니다. 전 정말 그때 끝났구나 싶었거든요. 그 독일군은 제 뒤쪽 아래에 있었고 우린 방향 전환도 할 수 없었기 때문에, 제 기관총으로 그 독일군을 겨눌 수가 없었습니다. 최소 영국 본토로 회송될 부상(blighty)이라도 당했어야 마땅한 상황이었으나, 총알들은 정말 아슬아슬하게 제 주변을 스쳐지나갈 뿐이었어요. 하나는 제 가죽 재킷을 긁고 지나가기도 했지만, 써머스와 저는 멀쩡했습니다. 

마침내 우린 전선에 다다랐고, 운명의 순간이 다가왔습니다. 써머스는 제게 참호 속으로 뛰어들 준비를 하라고 소리쳤습니다. 우리가 간신히 아군 참호에 도달할 수 있을거라 생각했거든요. 하지만 다행히도 우리는 아군 전선 800야드 뒤쪽에 무사히 착륙했습니다. 여유롭게 비행기에서 내려서 성공적인 탈출을 자축하던 순간, 어디선가 포탄이 날아오는 소리가 들렸습니다. 이어서 또 한발. 그리고 그 포탄들은 곧 우리 주위에서 터지기 시작했죠. 우린 서둘러 근처의 작은 마을로 달려갔습니다. 알고보니 여단 본부더라구요, 꽤나 안전한 곳이었죠.


We had dinner in the mess there and afterwards when it was dark, went out to have a look to see what damage the shelling had done. The machine was to all intents and purposes destroyed as they had put several Johnsons right on it.

우린 그곳 장교 식당에서 저녁을 먹었고, 어두워졌을 때 폭격 피해를 확인하러 나갔습니다. 비행기는 사실상 완파됐죠. 포탄 여러 발을 정통으로 맞았더라구요. 


We had another encounter the next day with two Huns, one of which we got the better of and drove away down home, while the other went of his own accord. They are jolly hard to hit though these Huns.

이튿날에도 독일군 비행기 두대와 교전했습니다. 둘 중 하나는 스스로 돌아갔고, 나머지는 몰아내는데 성공했습니다. 이 독일군놈들은 참 맞추기가 힘들어요. 


Yesterday too we had a brush with one in the clouds over Peronne but lost him in the clouds. That made the 3rd fight in three days! I think the War is going on fairly well, though we haven’t been doing much during the last few days. Everybody seems to be quite cheerful and confident and say that it’s going alright. Leave has started again in the squadron and I hope my turn will come in about three weeks’ time or perhaps before but it may be stopped anytime so don’t count on it.

이 편지를 쓰기 전날에도, 페론(프랑스) 상공에서 한 대와 마주쳤지만, 구름 속에서 놓쳐버렸어요. 사흘 간 세번의 공중전을 치른 셈이죠! 지금 전쟁은 우리한테 유리하게 진행되고 있는 것 같아요, 정작 최근에 우리가 딱히 한 일은 없지만요. 다들 분위기도 좋고 사기도 높고, 일이 잘 되어가고 있다고 말해요. 휴가도 다시 갈 수 있게 돼서, 아마 3주 뒤에 제 차례가 오지 않을까 싶어요. 근데 언제든 중단될 수 있으니 기대는 하지마세요. 


Well if I don’t stop now I shall miss the post so will close. It sounds rather funny Roger lecturing his Ma, (it is usually vice versa) but for goodness sake don’t fuss. It doesn’t do me any good and does you a lot of harm. If I was in the infantry you might have something to fuss about but where I am there is very little need to fuss at all.

여기서 마치지 않으면 우편 발송을 놓칠 듯하니, 이만 줄일게요. 아들이 엄마를 훈계하는 꼴이 되었는데(보통은 정반대죠) 부디 너무 걱정하지 마세요.저한테도 아무 도움이 안되고, 오히려 어머니한테 해가 될거에요. 제가 만약 보병이었다면 걱정할만하겠으나, 제가 있는 곳에선 그러실 필요가 없어요.

On the day that OP’s great-great uncle was shot down, he happened to be 1 of 4 pilots in a formation that included Arthur Rhys-Davids, a famous British ace who scored 27 victories. One of those victories happened to be on Werner Voss, a very feared German ace and close friend of the famous Red Baron. Voss put up such a good fight alone against Rhys-Davids and his fellow airmen that it is considered of the greatest dogfights of all time, and Rhys-Davids himself said, “if only I could have brought him down alive”.

작성자분 종증조부가 격추당한 바로 그날, 그는 그 유명한 영국 에이스 아서 리스-데이비스와 총 4대의 편대를 이루어 비행 중이었습니다. (아서 리스-데이비스: 27회 격추 기록)

27회의 에이스 중 하나는 베르너 보스를 상대로 기록한 것이었습니다. 베르너 보스 또한 매우 유명한 독일 에이스였고, 붉은 남작의 절친이었습니다.   

그날 보스는 혼자서 4:1로 리스-데이비스와 동료들을 상대로 너무나도 훌륭한 공중전을 선보였다고 합니다. 역사상 최고의 도그파이트(근접 공중전)으로 꼽힐 정도로요. 

리스-데이비스 본인도 “그를 살아서 착륙시킬 수 있었으면 얼마나 좋았을까”라고 말했다고 합니다. 

Edit: it turns out that Werner Voss was actually the one to shoot down OP’s great-great uncle that day, only to be avenged by Rhys-David’s a year later. Thanks to /u/boap69 for finding that fact in a book.

수정: 알고보니 작성자분 종증조부를 격추시킨 사람이 바로 베르너 보스였다네요. 

그리고 1년 뒤 리스-데이비스가 보스를 격추해서 복수한거구요. 

책에서 찾아내주신 [/u/boap69] 감사합니다.

 

역자: 구글에 Werner Voss가 격추시킨 조종사 목록을 검색해보면, 위키피디아에 작성자분 종증조부가 실제로 뜨네요. 1917년 5월 7일에 당한걸로 나옵니다. 작성자 아이디가 실제 성이었네요.
