Some of the Women On My Way Home From Vietnam

When Duster crews were back at the Battery Area, which wasn't all that often, we stayed in buildings we called hooches. And to be honest, we did virtually nothing to keep them clean. But then again, we didn't need to. Someone, I'm not sure who, hired Vietnamese women to clean the hooches. But they did much more. They washed our clothes and bedding. They kept an eye on our stuff because Duster crews were thieves. They worked hard, greeted us with a smile, and made our lives easier.

These ladies were mostly around my mom's age. For the most part men were fairly respectful, and if someone wasn't he found out quickly that it wasn't a good idea. We appreciated what they did for us.

So when it came time for me to leave, I realized that I could show my appreciation to the lady who was my platoon's "mamma san" by giving her all the scrip that I had left. Somewhere around $40 - $50 worth. Not that big, but you would have thought I had given her a fortune by the way she reacted.

We landed at night, after a 24-hour flight that ended up with three stops, Guam (scheduled?), Japan (unscheduled, the pilot was so calm we wondered what was wrong), and Alaska. We were told that we wouldn't unload at the usual location because of protesters. Turns out some of the protesters were waiting for us at the new location. I remember this very pretty college age girl spewing the most vile language at me, and trying to spit on us.

I had asked the ticket agent for the fastest way to Indianapolis. He warned that would require more legs and would cost more, but I had just spent a year spending about $40/month or less on a salary of $425/month with no federal income tax. I didn't care at the moment what it cost.

So this is my first leg of my trip home. At some point in time, I notice one of the flight attendants is behaving strangely. Whenever she stopped to help someone, she lowered herself so her head was on a level with the passenger she was helping. Except whenever she talked with the person across the aisle from me, where she bent at the waist giving me quite a view of a very nice behind about 12 inches from my face.

I appreciated the view. Part of me appreciated this a little too much. I tried to look away the next three or four times it happened, but with only partial success. To this day, I have no idea why I got this special treatment. I wasn't the only serviceman on board, so why only me? (In 1971, military haircuts stood out.)

As an amusing aside, at one point in this flight the pilot came on the speaker to tell us we were flying directly over Indianapolis Airport (my destination) at umptythousand feet.

The airport at Atlanta was huge! And I only had minutes (maybe 20?) to get to my next plane. It was tight, the ticket agent said to hurry. And I was confused. A lady wearing the uniform of one of the airlines saw me. I think she was on her way home, tired after a long shift, but she took the time to help me get to a place where she knew I'd make it before she turned around and walked back. I hope I thanked her properly, but I suspect I just rushed off.

I'm sure there were women on this flight, but nothing stands out. Once again the pilot (different accent) comes on the speaker to tell us we are flying directly over the Indianapolis airport, but we have started to decent for our landing in Chicago. This flying over Indianapolis was getting frustrating.

The woman in the seat next to me wasn't happy. She looked at my hair several times, and then asked the Flight Attendant if she could move to a different seat. I wasn't disappointed when she moved a few rows away.

Walking into the terminal building, I see my mom and dad who have come to pick me up. I give Mom a big hug and nod to Dad. I'm home.

27 days later I headed back to Fort Bliss to finish my enlistment.
