He loved that cigarette ration

그분은 보급 담배를 참 좋아하셨지

My wife's dad served in France & Germany 1944-45 (the 7th Army). He was a Mormon, so didn't smoke at all. However, every K and C ration came with either cigarettes (in a 4-pack!) or tobacco & rolling pap//ers. You'd think these would be useless to him. But not so. He traded his coffin nails to other soldiers in exchange for sugar and margarine - he didn't insist on it if they just needed nicotine. But everyone know that it was nice to give Rugged (his nickname) a bit of extra sugar & margarine.
제 장인어른은 1944~45년 프랑스와 독일에서 제7군 소속으로 복무하셨죠. 그분은 몰몬교도였기 때문에, 담배를 피우지 않았습니다. 그런데 모든 K와 C 레이션에는 담배(4개짜리) 또는 말아서 피는 잎담배와 종이가 들어있었죠. 언뜻 보면 이것들은 그분에게 쓸모가 없어보였을 수도 있겠네요. 하지만 그렇지 않았습니다. 그분은 담배를 다른 병사들에게 주고, 대신 설탕과 마가린을 받았죠. 상대가 니코틴을 너무나도 갈구할때는 그냥 주기도 했습니다. 하지만 다들 알고 있었죠, Rugged(그분의 별명. 원래 울퉁불퉁하다, 견고하다는 뜻)에게 설탕과 마가린을 주는게 그들에게도 더 이득이라는걸. 

Rugged did NOT eat the stuff he traded it for. You see, most of the war he was in France. So every single place they stopped, he would find a random farmhouse, and the Sergeant would let him go there. Of course every farmhouse had a French housewife. Rugged spoke a little French (he was a language professor in later life) talked to the wife, and made this deal: "Madame - cook our K-rations, and you can take this extra sugar and butter." Usually the housewife stole a little more out of the packets, too, but that was an expected part of the deal. Sugar and butter were in short supply in wartime France.
Rugged(러기드)는 바꿔온 물건을 먹지 않았습니다. 왜냐하면, 그분은 전쟁의 대부분을 프랑스에서 보냈거든요. 부대가 멈추는 곳마다 그는 어김없이 농가를 찾아냈고, 그는 하사의 허락을 받고 농가로 향했습니다. 그리고 모든 농가에는 프랑스 주부가 있었습니다. 프랑스어를 약간 할줄 알았던 러기드는(이후 그는 언어학 교수가 되었습니다) 주부와 거래를 했죠. "마담, 저희 K 레이션을 요리해주시면, 이 설탕과 버터를 드리겠습니다." 보통 주부들은 레이션에서 추가로 이것저것 더 빼가기도 했지만, 그건 감안된 부분이었죠. 전시 프랑스에서는 설탕과 버터가 귀했거든요. 

But the point was, they had the best meals in the whole battalion, because a Frenchwoman was cooking for the squad and whatever you say about the French, they know food! The various wives could turn K rations into amazing chow every time. When the squad wasn't right on the line, they could get C Rations too, and those were also improved, too, but the jump in quality was way bigger with K Rations.
결국 중요한건, 러기드의 소대가 대대를 통틀어서 최고의 식사를 즐겼다는겁니다. 프랑스 주부들이 요리를 해줬기 때문이죠! 누가 프랑스에 대해 뭐라하든, 그들의 요리 솜씨는 일품이니까요. 그 주부들은 K 레이션들을 매번 놀라운 식사로 바꿔주었습니다. 그들이 최전선에 있지 않았을때는 C 레이션도 받았는데, C 레이션도 마찬가지로 훌륭한 식사로 둔갑했습니다. 그렇다고 K 레이션만큼 맛이 눈에 띄게 나아지진 않았다네요. 

Also I was watching the old TV show Combat with him one time and as Vic Morrow's squad walked past yet another farmhouse, my father in law cried out, "Where's the gigantic pile of manure? EVERY French farmhouse has the biggest pile of manure right there in the yard." So that was a thing too. Guess Hollywood didn't want to show that bit.
한번은 장인어른과 함께 옛날 드라마 <컴뱃>을 보고 있었는데, 빅 모로우의 분대가 한 농가를 지나치는 장면에서 장인어른이 갑자기 소리쳤죠. "거대한 거름더미가 왜 안 보여? 프랑스 모든 농가의 마당 한복판에는 엄청나게 큰 거름더미가 있었는데." 그랬었다네요. 할리우드가 그걸 보여주긴 싫었나봅니다.
