USS 엔터프라이즈가 방주가 된 이야기

Time for another Enterprise story:
또다른 USS 엔터프라이즈 이야기:

Back in 1981-82 time frame, we were in the shipyards in Bremerton (near Seattle), WA, getting ready to leave the shipyards after a multi-year overhaul. We were going back to our home port of Alameda, CA, in the San Francisco Bay (where later we would run aground, but that's another story). Being as we'd been in Bremerton several years, most of the crew lived there, so everyone was going to have to move. Everyone being a couple thousand crew and their families and household goods. The Navy would move you, or let you do it yourself, but this time they did something special: you, your family, and your stuff could ride the ship for the three day cruise from Bremerton to California. How could you pass that up?
1981~82년 무렵에, 우리는 워싱턴주 시애틀 근처 브레머튼에 있는 조선소에서 몇년에 걸친 대대적인 정비를 마치고 출항 준비를 하고 있었어. 우린 모항인 캘리포니아 샌프란시스코 만의 앨러디마로 갈 계획이었어. (나중에 거기서 좌초되기도 했지만, 그 이야기는 다음에) 
브레머튼에서 몇년을 지낸 탓에 대부분의 승무원들은 그곳에 살고 있었고, 이제 다들 한꺼번에 이사해야했지. 몇천명에 가까운 승무원, 그의 가족들, 그리고 이삿짐 전부. 원래는 해군이 네 짐을 옮겨주거나 또는 너가 직접하도록 했었지만, 이번에는 특별한 선택지가 있었어. 너, 네 가족, 그리고 짐까지 모두 항공모함에 올라타서 3일간 브레머튼에서 캘리포니아까지 항해하기. 누가 이런 기회를 마다할 수 있겠어?  

So for several days they started loading the ship. A lot of guys rented U-hauls, loaded them up, and drove them onto the ship. The flight deck was covered with cars and truck and trailers. You would drive whatever you had onto the pier, up a ramp to the hanger bay, over to an aircraft elevator (one of those four big ones on the sides of the ship), it would take you up to the flight deck, then they would direct you to your parking spot, and chain your vehicle down. Kinda like concert parking. The motorcycles got to park on the hanger bay, back aft. So I (along with many of my shipmates) got the distinctive honor of driving our motorcycles on the Enterprise. I drove my Kawasaki 440 up the ramp, and across the hanger bay to the motorcycle area, and tied it down. Way cool!
그래서 며칠 동안 배에 짐을 실었어. 많은 사람들이 트럭을 렌트해서 거기다 짐을 싣고 배 안으로 직접 몰고 들어왔지. 비행갑판은 차, 트럭 그리고 트레일러로 가득찼어. 
네가 자동차를 운전해서 부두로 가져오면, 램프를 타고 올라와서 격납고로 들어오는 식이었어. 거기서 항공기 엘리베이터(함정 양 옆에 있는 4개의 커다란 엘리베이터 중 하나)를 타고 비행갑판으로 이동하면, 안내요원들이 널 지정된 주차구역으로 안내했어. 그리고 움직이지 않도록 사슬로 고정했지. 콘서트장 주차처럼 빽빽했지. 
오토바이들은 격납고 뒤쪽에 주차할 수 있었어. 그래서 나도 (그리고 다른 동료들과 함께) 오토바이를 몰고 USS 엔터프라이즈에 오르는 영광을 누렸지. 내 카와사키 440을 타고 램프를 타고 올라온 다음 격납고를 가로질러 오토바이 구역에 주차하고 고정시켰어. 정말 멋졌지! 

The extreme back end of the hanger bay was the aircraft engine shop; it was converted to the pet shop. That's where they housed all the pets. The families all got the rooms that were open due to not having an airwing with us. (Aircraft carriers only have aircraft when they're going out doing aircraft carrier stuff. The squadrons/aircraft/airdales are all based at Naval Air Stations.) So for about a week, we had many families sharing our ship. They all ate in our mess decks (dining areas), and wandered around getting excited. It was a cool, once-in-a-lifetime type thing.
격납고의 맨 뒤는 원래 항공기 엔진 정비소였는데, 그곳은 애완동물 보관소로 바뀌었어. 거기에다 가족들이 데려온 애완동물들을 갖다놨지. 
승무원의 가족들은 항공모함에 함재기가 없어서 비어있는 방들을 배정받았어. (항공모함은 임무를 수행할때만 항공기를 탑재해. 비행대대, 항공기와 항공기 담당 인원들은 다 해군 항공 기지 소속이야) 그래서 한 일주일 동안, 수많은 가족들이 우리 항공모함에서 함께 생활했어. 우리 식당에서 식사를 하고, 이곳저곳을 돌아다니며 다들 신나했지. 정말 살면서 한번 있을까말까한 멋진 경험이었어. 

Departure day comes, the flight deck and a lot of the hanger bay is covered with civilian vehicles, and families are on the ship this time, watching the land go away (There are pictures of this in our cruise book, which is like a high school yearbook). Most of the trip was stormy, but not bad. The tv [...] catered to them, and our nightly newscast featured some of them. It was fun.
출항 당일, 비행갑판과 격납고 대부분은 민간인 차량으로 가득했고, 가족들은 이번에 배가 멀어져가는걸 보는 대신 함께 배 위에서 육지가 멀어져가는 모습을 지켜보았어. (이 장면들은 우리 크루즈북, 그러니까 고등학교 졸업앨범 같은거에 사진으로 남아있어)
항해 내내 폭풍우가 있었지만, 심각하진 않았어. 가족들은 함내 TV(채널 여러개 있는 폐쇄회로 tv)를 볼 수 있었고, 밤마다 방송되는 뉴스 프로그램에는 가족들이 일부 소개되곤 했지. 재밌었어. 

Coming into Alameda, everyone was out on deck, watching everything. It was exciting. Pulled up to the pier, overcompensated, and pushed some of the barges under the pier, breaking some of the pilings. Oops, our bad. They put up the ramp and started getting the vehicles off. All of us were at our motorcycles, waiting. Then the call came: "Motorcycles, start up and get ready." Wooo hooo! So a couple dozen bikes fire up, and we're ready! Then we drive across the hanger bay to the ramp, down to the pier, and out to the parking lot. I met my family there (I'm a SF Bay Area native), and my Mom sees my motorcycle (I bought it in Bremerton, my first vehicle) and immediately tells me to get rid of it (motorcycle=bad). "What happened to you, you used to be a nice boy." "Mom, I'm still a nice boy, I just ride a motorcycle now." So we convoy off to my Mom's house, and I'm home, telling stories.
앨러미다에 입항할때, 모든 사람들이 갑판 위에 나와서 구경했어. 정말 장관이었지. 근데 우리가 부두에 너무 과격하게 들어오느라 바지선 몇 척이 부두 밑으로 밀려들어가면서 말뚝들이 몇개 부러졌어. 미안.
곧바로 램프가 놓이고, 차량들을 내리기 시작했어. 우린 다들 자기 오토바이 옆에서 대기 중이었지. 그리고 방송이 들려왔어. "오토바이, 시동 걸고 준비." 와후! 그래서 수십대의 오토바이가 동시에 시동을 걸고, 대기했지. 그 다음 격납고를 가로질러서 램프를 내려간다음, 부두로 나가서 주차장까지 이동했어. 주차장에서 난 내 가족을 만났어.(난 샌프란시스코 만 지역 토박이거든) 
엄마는 내 오토바이를 보자마자 갖다버리라고 하셨지. (내가 브레머튼에서 산, 처음으로 구매한 탈것인데. 엄마한텐 오토바이=나쁨) "어찌된 일이니, 넌 원래 너무나도 착한 아이.였는데." "엄마, 전 아직도 착한 아이에요, 다만 이제 오토바이를 탈 뿐이죠." 
그 다음 우린 집으로 향했고, 난 그 동안 있었던 일들에 대해 신나게 얘기했어. 

I often wonder how it worked with those U-hauls; about a thousand mile drive, and they put on less than 100 miles.
난 종종 그 트럭 렌트 회사가 어떻게 반응했을지 궁금해. 분명히 이동거리가 1600km 쯤 되는데 마일리지가 160km도 안 찍혀있었을거야.
