Cold War awareness meeting backfires with a military brat

도리어 역효과를 낳은 군인 자녀와의 냉전 교육

Hi I’m an old navy brat, these are some stories that are my childhood dealing with things living on military bases with a military family.
안녕하세요, 전 해군 집안에서 자랐었습니다. 
군인 가족으로서, 어린 시절 군 기지에서 자라면서 겪었던 몇 가지 일화들을 말씀드리려구요.

Background: during the latter 70s and early 80s, the paranoia surrounding nuclear bombs and a possible attack became so bad that the government sent out educational teams to speak at schools to try to calm people down.
배경: 70년대 후반 그리고 80년대 초까지, 시민들의 핵폭//탄과 핵폭//탄 공격에 대한 두려움이 너무나도 심각해져서, 정부에서는 사람들을 진정시키려는 목적으로 학교에 교육팀을 파견했습니다. 

Sadly now, we know the information they gave was incomplete and sometimes completely false.
안타깝게도, 지금 우리는 그들이 제공했던 정보가 불완전했거나 때로는 완전히 거짓이었다는걸 알죠. 

Onto the story.
이제 본 이야기입니다. 

My dad had been posted to this base for a little over a year.
아버지가 이 기지에 온지 1년이 조금 넘은 시점이었습니다. 

I was attending a private school in a town that was nothing more than a wide spot in the road and had a Navy base for training fighter pilots. It was halfway between two big cities, each about an hour and a half away.
전 한 마을의 사립학교에 다니고 있었습니다. 이 마을엔 해군 전투기 조종사 훈련 기지를 제외하면, 아무 것도 없었어요. 그리고 이 마을은 두 커다란 도시 사이의 중간에 있었습니다. 둘 다 차로 한시간 반 거리였죠. 

This town had a public elementary, a public high school and one private school. The educational team came in to first talk at the high school and then the private school.
이 마을에는 공립 초등학교, 공립 고등학교, 그리고 사립학교가 하나씩 있었습니다. 정부 교육팀은 먼저 공립 고등학교에 가서 교육을 진행한 뒤 제가 다니는 사립학교를 찾아왔죠.
 
I later found out that at the public high school, the kids acted appropriately scared and listened attentively to what they were told. It was the same at my private school except for me.
나중에 알게 된거지만, 공립 고등학교에서는 학생들이 적절하게 겁을 먹은 모습을 보였고, 교육팀의 이야기를 주의깊게 들었다더군요. 우리 사립학교에서도 마찬가지였구요. 저 빼고. 

After we were sent back to our class, I was called into the principals office. Not only was the educational team from the government there, so were the church elders who ran the private school.
다시 교실로 돌아온 뒤, 전 교장실로 불려갔습니다. 그 자리에는 정부에서 온 교육팀 뿐만 아니라 사립학교를 운영하는 교회 장로들도 있었습니다. 

The school principal asked me to sit down and said that the team wanted to ask me some questions.
교장님은 저보고 앉으라 한 뒤, 정부팀이 제게 몇가지 질문을 물어보고 싶어한다 했습니다. 

What went through my mind was that this might have something to do with my father’s previous posting. He had just served back to back postings in Joint Chiefs of staff, first the Pentagon and then the state department in DC.
순간 제 머릿속을 스친 생각은, 이게 아버지의 이전 근무지와 관련 있을지도 모른다는 것이었습니다. 최근에 아버지는 합참에서 연이어 두 개의 보직을 맡았었거든요. 처음엔 펜타곤, 그리고 D.C. 미 국무부.

Come to find out, the government team couldn’t understand why I was bored and mostly ignoring what they were saying and showing.
알고보니, 정부팀은 제가 왜 그들의 교육 자료를 보고도 지루해하거나 무시하는 태도를 보이는지 이해하지 못했던거였어요. 

I had the distinct pleasure of informing them that because of spending part of my childhood with my father stationed in Okinawa, Japan, that I had learned about World War II and how America dropped 2 atomic bombs on Japanese soil. I had also been taught just how terrible it was and as we grew up, our father kept us up-to-date on just how dangerous these bombs were and why we needed soldiers to prevent anyone from using them. Also, I was able to tell them that we were literally at Ground Zero. Because the Navy base in the town was halfway between two extremely large tactical bases. They would vaporize our location and irradiate the other locations, killing all people but leaving the equipment to be taken over by the invading force.
그래서 전 기꺼이 알려드렸죠. 제가 어렸을때 아버지가 오키나와에서 근무하셨고, 덕분에 2차 세계대전에 대해, 그리고 미국이 일본에 원자/폭//탄을 두번 떨어뜨렸다는 사실을 배웠다했죠. 또한 그 폭//탄이 얼마나 끔찍했으며, 우리가 자라면서 아버지께선 이 폭//탄이 어떻게 발전하고 있는지, 그리고 왜 그것의 사용을 막기 위해 군인들이 필요한지 알려주셨다고 말씀드렸습니다. 
그리고 전 우리가 사실상 '폭//탄이 떨어질 지점'에 있다는걸 알려드렸죠. 왜나하면 마을의 해군 기지는 매우 커다란 전술 기지 두 곳의 중간 지점에 있었거든요. 적들이 우리가 있는 곳을 증발시키고 나머지 지점들을 방사능으로 오염시킬거라 했습니다. 사람들만 죽이고, 장비만 남겨서 적군들이 쓸 수 있게요. 

The principal, Church elders, A few school staff And the entire government team went white as sheets.
교장님, 교회 장로들, 교직원들과 정부팀 전원의 얼굴들이 전부 다 새햐얗게 질려버렸죠.

They almost begged me to not tell anyone what I just told them. After I promised to not tell anyone, they sent me back to class. When my classmates asked me what they wanted, I just told them they wanted to talk to me about not paying proper attention during the demonstration.
그들은 제가 방금 말한 내용을 누구한테도 말하지말라고 애원했습니다. 제가 말하지 않겠다고 약속한 뒤에야 그들은 절 교실로 돌려보냈죠. 반 애들이 절 왜 불러냈는지 물어봤을때, 전 그냥 교육 시간 중에 불량한 태도에 대해 한 소리 들었다고만 했습니다. 

Lesson: be careful when asking a military brat about military info.
교훈: 군인 자녀에게 군사 정보에 대해 물어볼때는 조심하세요.
