His brother, the Marine Sniper

형이 해병대 수색대 저격수였던 훈련병

I went to Marine boot camp in San Diego in 1988. One guy in my platoon had a verrry distinctive last name — one that made him stand out. During roll call one of our DI's got to his name and paused, then stormed right up to the recruit.
난 1988년, 샌디에고의 해병대 훈련소에 입소했어. 
우리 소대에는 아주 독특한 성을 가진 친구가 있었어. 교관들 눈에 확 띄는 이름이었지.
점호때 한 교관이 그 친구 차례가 되자 잠시 멈칫하더니, 곧바로 그 친구 앞으로 다가갔어. 

“Is your name Andrew P_?” “Sir, yes sir!” “Is your brother also a Marine?” “Sir, yes sir!” “Is his name Gunnery Sergeant Joseph P_?” “Sir, yes sir!” “Is he a scout sniper instructor in Okinawa?” “Sir, yes sir!”
"니 이름이 앤드류 P야?" "예 그렇습니다!"
"니 형도 해병이냐?" "예 그렇습니다!"
"니 형이 조셉 P 중사야?" "예 그렇습니다!"
"수색대 저격수 교관이고 지금 오키나와에 있는?" "예 그렇습니다!"

Then the DI barked, “I hate that motherfucker! He is a genuine prick! I can't get to him, but I got you. You're going to pay in his stead. On your face, recruit!”
그러자 갑자기 교관이 소리쳤어.
"난 그 개새끼가 정말 싫어! 존나게 띠껍거든! 걔는 못 건드리지만, 넌 내꺼야. 형 대신 너가 갚아야겠다. 엎드려, 훈련병!"

He proceeded to bend poor Private P____ for thirty straight minutes. The next day, 3–4 other former scout sniper DI's dropped by “to visit” and bent him again — forever, it seemed. The look on the guy's face was something I won’t forget.
그래서 불쌍한 P 훈련병은 30분 내내 얼차려를 받았어. 다음날, 전직 수색대 저격수 교관들 서너명이 "방문 차" 들러서 또다시 그를 괴롭혔어. 정말 오랫동안.  
그때 그 친구 표정은 평생 잊지 못할거야. 

We all felt awful for him, but you learned pretty quick in boot camp that arguing with a DI rarely ends well. Still, seeing someone punished simply because of a relative’s reputation stuck with me. Anybody else have a DI take out a personal grudge that landed on an innocent recruit?
우리 훈련병들은 다들 그를 불쌍하게 쳐다봤지만, 훈련소에서는 교관에게 대들어서는 좋을게 없다는걸 금방 배우게 됐지. 그래도, 단지 친척의 평판 때문에 누군가 처벌받는 모습은 쉽게 잊혀지지 않더라고. 혹시 다른 사람도 교관이 개인적인 원한을 엄한 훈련병한테 푸는걸 본 적이 있니?
