56 years ago today...

지금으로부터 56년 전…

 

56 years ago today, 24 September 1969, I reported to the Los Angeles induction station, and was drafted into the US Army. I'd expected to be assigned to Ft Ord for BCT, but uncle sammy had other ideas, like Ft Bliss TX, instead, and me and another 20 or so enlistees/draftees were bussed to LAX and put on a regular Continental flight to El Paso TX.

오늘로부터 56년 전인 1969년 9월 24일에 나는 로스엔젤레스 징병소에 보고했고, 미 육군에 징집되었어. 난 포트 오드(캘리포니아 기지)에 배정받을거라 예상했지만, 엉클샘에게는 다른 꿍꿍이가 있었어. 예를 들자면 텍사스에 있는 포트 블리스. 나와 스무명 가량의 징집병들은 버스를 타고 로스엔젤레스 공항으로 이동했고, 거기서 콘티넨탈 항공편을 타고 엘파소 텍사스로 향했어. 

 

What was fun, and a sneak preview of the verbal abuse we would soon be subject to, when the plane arrived at the gate and the flight attendant opened the door, a smokie hatted DS poked his head in, and started screaming abusive obscenities, along the the phrase "GET OFF MY AIRPLANE"...

비행기가 게이트에 도착하고 승무원이 문을 열자마자, 우리가 곧 겪게 될 언어폭력을 미리 맛볼 수 있는 신나는 기회가 우릴 맞이했어.

모자를 쓴 교관이 기내로 머리를 들이밀더니, 욕설과 함께 “내 비행기에서 당장 내려!”라며 고함을 치기 시작한거야.

 

We, who were the targets of this over eager DS were only perhaps 20 of the total 100+ passengers on this flight, and a man with 4 stripes on his epalets came out of the cockpit and in a loud firm voice said "THIS IS MY AIRPLANE AND YOU WILL CONFINE YOUR ABUSE OUTSIDE THIS AIRPLANE".. DS instantly shuts up.. Remember, 90% of the passengers were regular passengers, with shocked looks on their faces when the DS started his tirade. Scuttlebutt had it that this DS got chewed out by the base CO, due to the airline complaining.. We all waited till the regular passengers got off before we headed out to DS's "tender mercies"..

이 열정 넘치는 교관의 목표물인 우리는 100명이 넘는 승객 중 고작 스무명 남짓이었어.

그때 조종석에서 어깨에 4줄짜리 견장을 단 남자가 나오더니, 크고 단호한 목소리로

“이건 제 비행기입니다. 당신의 욕설은 이 비행기 안에서 용납되지 않습니다.”라고 했어.

교관은 즉시 입을 다물었지.

비행기 안의 승객 중 90%가 일반 승객이었고, 다들 교관의 고함을 듣고 충격에 빠진 표정을 짓고 있었거든. 풍문에 의하면, 항공사가 기지 사령관한테 이에 대해 불만을 제기했고, 기지 사령관은 해당 교관을 호되게 꾸짖었대.

우리 징집병들은 일반 승객들이 다 내릴 때까지 기다렸다가, 교관들의 “따뜻한 환영”을 받으러 비행기에서 내렸어.
