군사글) 이오지마 전투는 태평양 전쟁 중 미군 손실이 일본군 손실보다 컸던 유일한 지상전이었다. 이오지마 수비대 사령관으로 부임한 쿠리바야시 타다미치(栗林忠道) 중장은 미군이 제공권과 제해권을 가져간 상태에서 적 포격과 공습에 노출된 병력과 장비들을 참호와 벙커, 땅굴 등이 복합적으로 결합된 섬 내부의 방어네트워크에 배치한 뒤 미군을 끌어들여 피해를 강요하고 시간을 소요시키는 지연전을 성공적으로 수행했다. 그러나 그 대가로 거의 2만에 달하던 일본군 중 약 99%가 전사·실종되었다. 하르그섬과 당시 이오지마의 면적은 약 20km2 으로 매우 비슷하다.
