앞서 언급된 헨리 왕이(herry kynge [sic]) 코 옆 얼굴 왼쪽 부분에 화살(arow)을 맞았는데, 그 화살은 가로질러 들어갔으며, 화살대(schaft)가 뽑힌 후에도 화살촉(hede)은 머리뼈 뒤쪽 부분에 6인치 깊이로 그대로 박혀 있었다. 그리고 당시 국왕의 외과의사(surgen to be kynge)였던 존 브래드모어가 케닐워스 성에서 그를 치료했는데, 그 무렵 해당 성에는 다양한 현명한 의사들이 찾아와 약물(drynkys)이나 다른 치료법으로 화살촉을 빼내겠다고 말했으나 그들은 해내지 못했다.









마침내 존 브래드모어가 해당 치료(cur)를 맡게 되었고 특수한 도구(Instrume[n]t)를 사용하여 화살촉을 빼냈는데, 그 도구는 집게 모양으로 만들어졌으며 둥글고 속이 빈 형태였고, 그 중심부를 통해 작은 나사못 모양의 기구(lytyll wyse)가 들어가 그 도구와 함께 화살촉이 뽑혀 나왔다. 그 후 상처를 와인(wyne)으로 씻어내고 포퓰리온(populion)³ 3모금과 꿀(hony) 1모금 비율로 섞은 세정 연고(mu[n]dificatyfe onyme[n]t)로 깨끗이 닦아내기를 7일 동안 계속했으며, 그 후에는 짙은 색의 외과 연고(vng[guentu]m fuscu' cirurgicu')⁴로 해당 부위를 씻어냈다.




그리고 매우 유용한 일반적인 규칙(gen[er]all rewle)으로 다음을 명심하라. 화살촉이나 다트촉이 단단히 박힌 곳이라면 어디든 빼내기 전에 먼저 장미 기름(oyle of Rosse)과 같은 연화제(malificatyfe thy[n]ge)로 그 부위를 부드럽게 만드는 것이 필요하다. 만약 그렇게 하지 않는다면 환자가 사망(deth)에 이를 수도 있기 때문이다. 그리고 만약 화살대와 함께 화살촉이 뼈(bon[e])에 아주 얕게 들어가서 큰 고통 없이 쉽게 뽑아낼 수 있다면, 다음 날까지 화살을 해당 신체 부위에 꽂힌 채로 그대로 두도록 하라. 그 시간 동안 화살촉 안의 화살대에서 피(blod)가 멎고 응고될 것이며, 상처의 습기(moystnes of be wounde)로 인해 부풀어 올라, 그 결과 화살대가 화살촉에 더 단단히 고정될 것이기 때문이다. 그러고 나서 다음 날이면 화살촉을 화살대와 함께 빼낼 수 있는데, 빼낼 때는 화살대를 손으로 잡고 화살대를 약간 비틀면서 그렇게 빼내어야 한다.




그리고 만약 화살촉이 화살대 없이 박혀 있다면, 이를 위해 만들어진 긴 집게 모양의 도구(payer of longe pynsons)를 사용하여 그것으로 촉을 빼내고, 미리 상처를 심지(tayntynge)로 벌려 넓게 유지하며, 그 직후에는 상처가 부패한 것들로부터 완벽하게 깨끗해질 때까지 앞서 말한 포퓰리온과 꿀로 만든 세정 연고를 사용하고, 그 후에는 총상(woundd of be Gyne [i.e. gun])에 대해 앞서 말한 것처럼 재생 연고(Regen[er]atyfe onyme[n]t)를 사용하여 치료하라.
