Lt. Col. Angela King-Sweigart, a spokeswoman for the National Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap, said a weapons expert believes the object to be a projectile from a 120 mm sabot munition. She added that the projectile was not the entire munition or round.
The object was found at around 1:25 p.m. Oct. 22 on the Front Street River Walk at Peffer Street. Harrisburg police described the object as a tank sabot projectile, which is used to pierce armored targets.
King-Sweigart said that type of projectile is not something that is fired at the training post and hasn't been fired at the location in many years. Without seeing the weapon in person, the weapons expert couldn't say if there was any danger to the public, King-Sweigart said. She noted that the jogger who found the projectile did the right thing in alerting authorities, pointing to the military policy of recognize, retreat and report when finding any suspicious weapon or munition.
