Why you may never have trained tactics.

This is the first post in a series that will combine our thoughts with those of several subject matter experts. This time it's Mike Pannone of CTT Solutions.

Whats the definition of tactics? The word gets used a lot, especially in the training industry and still a lot of people cant come up with a proper definition. While I dont think that you need like a textbook definition, self proclaimed professionals should be able to answer this question.

Mike: „Tactics describe the approach to complex problems using the implementation of a specific set of techniques, allowing an individual or group to remain within the principles of an established doctrine.

RBT: „ Tactics are the art of arranging forces before and during battle in order to be victorious"

Both of our formulations have two things in common: creativity and problem solving. When you are only sticking to patterns hat are pre-made you dont apply tactics. Therefore the most important part of tactics, namely decisionmaking, is lacking in most offers.

This is especially true with „Flat Range Tactics“ where an instructor presents us a pre-made solution in a „scenario“ that is set-up as a self fulfilling prophecy. The decisionmaking process is indeed taken over by the instructor instead of the student.

As soon as the student derives from the chosen procedure of the instructor, the scenario gets interrupted or even reset. No matter if the solution chosen by the student would lead to success or not.

This is often "substituted" by abstruse "scenarios" that are exclusively set up to show that the instructors way to do it is right.

The „small-unit tactician“ gets rendered down to a craftsman instead of an artist.

Due to that he ends up carrying an often overladden toolbox. „Its just another tool in the toolbox“ is what we hear often when procedures get justified. This discourages the student from finding own solutions on the move.

While procedures as a premade solution to a certain issue have their place, they arent a suitable substitute for tactics. Procedures can supplement tactics, but they can't replace them.

So when did you last train tactics?
