Yang quickly faded into obscurity, working as an English teacher until he moved to the US in 2015.

Within a few years of Yang’s brief moment in the spotlight, emerging stars including Seo ㅌㅈ and Boys, a band considered as innovators who marked the start of modern K-pop, were laying the ground for its expansion to global popularity, now epitomized by septet ㅂㅌㅅ.

Yang’s big break came three decades after he first began performing.

Citizens now in their 50s and 60s worked for and benefitted from rapid economic growth and value endurance and conformity, but many Koreans in their 20s and 30s refer to themselves as members of the Sampo, or “three sacrifice”, generation -- forced to give up marriages, relationships and children in the face of intense job competition and expensive housing in the country’s cut-throat economy.

한국 50, 60 대는 그동안 이룬 급성장한 경제성장을 위해 열심히 일하고 개인보다 '우리'가 강조된 시대를 살던 세대들이고 한국 20, 30 대는 스스로를 삼포세대라 부르며 직장, 결혼, 부동산(첫집장만) 등 치열한 경쟁속에 모든 것을 포기한 세대.

“Before discovering Yang, I’d never met anyone in their 50s who made me think, ‘Wow, that person is cool, that’s how I want to be like 20 or 30 years from now,” said Lee Young-jun, a 35-year-old YouTuber who creates fan content about Yang. “But Yang is different.”

"ㅇㅈㅇ씨를 알기 전에는 이렇게 쿨하고, 나도 20, 30년 후에 늙어서 저렇게 늙고 싶다라고 생각되는 오십 대를 만나 본적이 없어요"라고 35세 유튜버 Lee Young-jun씨가 말한다. "ㅇㅈㅇ씨는 다른 사람들하고 달라요."

Tamar Herman, a K-pop correspondent for Billboard, says fans are looking “nostalgically at the past”. Bringing “hidden gems” like him to light, she added, “gives audiences a sense that they can change the past at a time when changing the present is hard”.

빌보드에서 K-pop을 담당하고 있는Tamar Herman는 "숨겨진 보석이였던 ㅇㅈㅇ씨를 현재로 끌어내면서 팬들은 과거의 아련함을 그에게서 느끼는 것 같다. 동시에 팬들은 (팬들의) 현실을 바꿀 순 없지만 그의 (ㅇㅈㅇ씨의) 과거는 바꿀 수 있다는 느낌을 받는 것 같다"고 말한다.
